Personal Narrative: My Emerging Leaders

Improved Essays
At The University of Akron, I have already experienced some great times with some great people. One of my most exciting experiences so far was move in day! Coming to college I didn’t know what to expect, let alone what to expect from Emerging Leaders. On move in day, it was exciting and flowed nice and easy. I was expecting being frustrated trying to get my stuff up to my room, but when I saw all of the students volunteering their time to help out I knew I was in for a good time. After I got settled in to my room and moved my furniture and appliances to my liking, it was on to meetings and activities. Not going to lie, some meetings were slightly boring, but I did get to meet a lot of new people in the process. The activities were some of the best, most enjoyable experiences I have had in a long time. The night Jonathan Burns came into the ballroom and performed his comedic act was the most I have ever laughed in my life. After a long day of meetings he provided my friends and I with a great night of laughs and jokes. So far in my first two weeks, I have had many great experiences on campus. Like every college student, I have my worries and concerns. First off, I was worried I wasn’t going to make …show more content…
I have met lots of great people from places all over the country and some from different countries! I have had a great time getting to know new people through the speakers brought in by the program. The main speakers that came in were all very helpful and inspiring to us college students. I for one, sure learned more about myself than I did prior to being a part of such a great organization. Now that all the meetings are over, I am glad to be a part of all of the 9:09 and 7:17 events. I work with Jeff, and he is kind of like the advertiser of all of the events. Whether it’s passing out flyers or advertising by word of mouth, I am glad to serve and support the Emerging

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

Each Welcome Week Leader did a phenomenal job at making myself and other incoming freshman excited about the activities offered and the beginning of our college adventures. For many years I have held Bison Pride and nothing in the past week gave me any reason to doubt my choice college. Along with never feeling disappointed, I was also pleasantly surprised. Throughout high school, we were told that college professors are out to fail their students and don’t truly care how we do in their classes. In reality, they want to provide each of us with a challenge and are very willing to assist those students who are ready to put in the time to…

I have been a part of the Future Business Leaders of America since middle school. One of the challenges that I had to overcome in becoming ready for college and career was "speaking up". I have always been a quiet person and I was never a fan of the spotlight. I would do almost anything to escape talking in public, but my teachers and advisers saw something in me that I would have never seen.…

Discuss a leadership experience you have had in any area of your life: school, work, athletics, family, church, community, etc. How and why did you become a leader in this area? How did this experience influence your goals? I was playing soccer with my friends in my neighborhood just a normal day everything looked as usual. But while I was playing soccer I was hearing a noise, not knowing if I am the only one who is hearing I felt deluded for a moment and stopped playing soccer and headed to the direction where the noise was coming from.…

When I grow up, I want to change the world! Changing the world one day would make me feel really good. Three ways I would change the world are: make sure everyone has a shelter to live in; help more lost, sick, and hurt animals, and make sure no one is hungry. I would like to help homeless people have a nice place to stay. When I’m driving downtown I see a lot of homeless people on the streets; dirty, and sad.…

Making It to the Big Time I am Vincent Crabtree. When I was a freshman in High School, I participated in an activity called “Winter Percussion”. It was much like marching band, but it took place during the winter and spring season, and it featured a smaller ensemble composed mostly of percussive instruments. Throughout the season, we had practice almost nightly, working to put together a show that would be performed in competition with other drumlines.…

There is not one set definition of what a leader is, there are generalizations for a set definition but a leader means different things for every person on this Earth. Leadership can be exhibited in various ways. Learning to be a leader takes many years of experience and is always a learning process. The persons that I chose to be my ten leaders are individuals who I think have had enough experience to become the great leaders that they are today. My first semester at Texas A&M made me realize how quickly time transgresses. As a student that came in with an abundant amount of hours to the university, I feel that each day I spend in class is invaluable. With the credit hours I came in with, I am set to graduate in the Spring of 2018. Knowing that my time on campus is much shorter than other students, I find each day a valuable experience and memory. Academically, I feel at ease since I came in with much experience in rigorous courses and have always been a disciplined student.…

Assessing My Style of Leadership There are many great leaders in this world, but they don’t all use the same method or style of leadership. Determining your leadership strengths and weaknesses can help determine a leadership style that best suits you, enabling the identification of ones strengths and the opportunity to improve weaknesses. Doing so will help you maximize your leadership abilities. I will be using the University of Kent Leadership Assessment to assess and explain my leadership style. These results will be analyzed and examined to see which assessment results were most surprising.…

I have my strengths as a leader which makes me think that I can make a good leader in the future. First, I believe in team building and mobilization. My group mobilization skills are quite unique since my lower school days. As a leader, I will be expected to lead people and a mobilization is a must because for people to adopt or accept the decisions made by the leader, they need to be mobilized to join the supporting course. Secondly, I am always very critical of issues that I come around and I think this would be useful in the future in a position of leadership.…

The beginning of my first semester at the University of Akron, has been a complete roller coaster. I have made friends, lost friends, dropped classes and of course, slept through classes. Being five hours away from my home in South Bend, Indiana has affected me more than I thought it would. I came into college thinking that I would make a ton of friends, get excellent grades and maybe even go to a few parties. I did not think that I would be close to almost dropping out of college as a whole.…

Many people come into college feeling unprepared, nervous, and unconfident, and while being convinced that I was indeed prepared, I couldn’t help but feel some of these stressful emotions. Over the past month and a half, I have adapted to my new environment that is Pacific Lutheran University (PLU), and feel much more sure of myself as I continue through this semester. I have learned about what skills and mindsets can lead to a successful college experience, such as hope, grit, and resilience. I have also been able to reflect on myself as a person, and identify strengths, values, and abilities I possess that I can use to my advantage. Finally, I have learned about different resources I have surrounding me, and different aspects of PLU that…

I had never felt such a complicated mix of anxiety, excitement, honor, and sadness like I during that moment. These leaders which I looked up to were now stepping down one by one, formally relinquishing their post and turning over all duties and responsibilities to their respective successor. I stood there trembling while smiling, waiting for them to call me last and then it happened. I heard her finally say “It is my pleasure to announce that as of this moment I hereby pass down the title and responsibilities of President to your next leader, Kristian”. I knew then that it was no longer a freshman’s dream but reality.…
