Personal Narrative: My Experience At Startup Island

My experience at the Startup Island speaker event was not at all what I had expected. A female architecture student in a room full of young, suit-wearing business men, I felt a little out of my element. After a series of announcements regarding upcoming events in the entrepreneur’s club, Josh and Brian were welcomed to the front of the room. The energy in the room was instantly transformed as they first introduced themselves and then immediately asked everyone to stand. We were guided through a series of changes that resulted in every seat being shuffled and asked to introduce ourselves to our new neighbors. This somehow put me at ease as I settled in to listen to what I was sure would be a great presentation. Brian and Josh are the kind of presenters I think we all aspire to be. As each of the co-founders ran through their story by way of highlighting what they called their “defining moments”, I felt like I was having a conversation with just the two of them. However, this particularly informal style of speaking meant that I had to look a …show more content…
This spring, Startup Island is going to be hosting slightly larger version of the same series offered for the first time last year. However, if this was my business, I would spend more time and resources trying to expand the potential market. Currently, the business only applies to undergrad business students with time available during spring break. I would try to expand this to include corporate employees, college students during the summer and winter breaks, and students within other majors. The general concept for Startup Island is very strong, and with minimal tweaking, I think it could be applied to a variety of different seminar retreat possibilities. However, Startup Island is still a very new company with great potential for growth in the coming years in these

I attended a speaker event representing Land O’Lakes Inc. on October 25, 2016 from 6 PM to 7 PM in Blegen Hall, which was presented by Adam. To briefly discuss about the speaker’s education, he finished his undergraduate degree in History and is currently an MBA candidate at the Carlson School of Management with a particular focus on supply chain management. One of the reasons he decided to join the Carlson School of Management to pursue a graduate degree is to seek more career opportunities as he could not find a job within his field after his graduation from college. Besides his academic career, he has a five-year work experience in the Land O’Lakes. Inc.…

Refection: The Unconventional Guest Speaker In Business 101, as a class, we were introduced to various guest speakers, who worked in some aspect of business. The guest speaker, who stood out the most, was Jared Loftus. Unlike the majority of guest speakers who discussed how great their company is and their success, Loftus took a different approach. Instead of focusing on his success, he discussed his “failures” in depth, which (in my opinion) was the most important lesson of all.…

Tom Baker Hour I had the opportunity to be able to attend the Tom Baker Hour with a special guest of Jack Jones. Right off the bat, I was comfortable with the topic of conversation whenever they introduced the candidates for the elevator pitch contest. In the classroom we went over what exactly an elevator pitch is and how helpful it is to have one in the future when networking. I really enjoyed watching a variety of people present their elevator pitches, some included CofC students and some were local businesses from the Charleston area.…

“A leader has to watch every word he or she says and quickly learns that you can’t go through life without a few critics, some well deserved” (pg. 5), this quote as some of the beginning words from MacDonald truly shows that a leader has responsibilities to uphold to. I found it interesting that he showed these responsibilities are not only external, but internal as well. Many do not realize the internal battles that leaders in ministry go through, and in order for leaders to handle a situation in a mature manner; they must uphold to the responsibilities of character they are expected to maintain. There are many internal and external expectations of leaders that are specified in Building Below the Waterline, but only some really stood out to me as factors that I would practice more than others in my leadership positions.…

How many public speeches have you heard? Since I was a kid, I have been a fan of great public figures making historical speeches, especially during a time of crisis. Notably, one of my favorite public speeches was given on April 3, 1968, by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., entitled, “I’ve Been to the Mountain Top”, which was the very last speech he gave and is considered an iconic moment in American history. Keep in mind, Dr. King was assassinated the following day. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech, motivated individuals and intensified their passion and hope for equality, in a room full of disadvantage African-Americans.…

Part A Our group chose to discuss rhetoric and sophistry amongst characters in Thank You for Smoking (Rietman 2006) and to what extent does the film present an ethical argument. Upon analysing Naylor’s, Finistirre’s and Holloway’s speech, it was prudent to first establish the context for the audience’s ease of understanding. As the producer, I discussed the marketing and production aspects of the film, providing the quantitative figures. More importantly, I establish Reitman’s motivations and style in his script which allow us to derive the conclusion that the individual characters are sophists, but the film is rhetorical.…

While some people may think of event management as a degree in party planning, it is gaining credibility as a legitimate career. The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council created event management standards which also led to the definition of exactly what an event is (Robertson, 2015). An event is “a social form that organizes interaction in a distinctive way” or the “gathering of three or more people who agree to assemble for a purpose ostensibly related to the functioning of an organization or group” (Beaulie, 2004). According to Michael Auerbach, “in 2006 there were 51,000 event planners in the U.S. and 39% of those were within an event planning company” which demonstrates the grand size of the industry and its obvious importance to society (2015). The purpose of this paper is to explore a career in event planning.…
