The Solon Feed Mill: A Short Story

Improved Essays
It was just another regular day working at the Solon Feed Mill, until my friend Spencer texted me. He told me that our other friend, Matthew, had just quit his job at Nelson Electric and that they were looking for another person to work there. Spencer has been one of my best friends all throughout high school. He’s about 6’0, 190 lbs and built like a brick wall. He’s going to go play football at Loras College as a DE/LB. They were going to start a project at Kirkwood in the summer, called the Kirkwood Lighting Project and needed another unindentured worker. So he asked me if I wanted the job and that If I did, he’d let the owner know that I would be interested in doing it. I told him I’d take the day to think about it because I’ve never really …show more content…
I got there at about 9:25ish and walked in. I met the secretary lady, Lora, as soon as I walked in. She told me to go wait in their little meeting room and to wait for Dave. It took about a couple minutes and I heard a knock on the door and in came Dave. He was about my same height as me, dark hair, glasses, and had a smile on his face. The interview didn’t last very long and consisted of very few questions. He asked me where I was currently working and why I wanted to leave. And then asked me when I could start. I told him that I’d have to let my current boss know that I was leaving and get it worked out with him. He then told me that before I start working, I have to visit a few Union places and fill out paperwork and that I had to take a drug test. The next day, I broke the news to everyone, and it didn’t really surprise anyone. Everyone knew that business was slow and that I was getting tired of not getting that many hours. I got it worked out with my boss to stay with them for another week to finish working there. The first day couldn’t come any sooner, because once everyone found out I was leaving. I got stuck with all of the grunt work that they were putting off for …show more content…
They needed someone to go out to the Target on the west side of Cedar Rapids to help out. I didn’t really do much that day. It was a lot of moving stuff around and just kind of getting a feel for the new working environment and people. The summer was where the real fun was at. I worked at a few of the Kirkwood Regional Centers and wired new lights for some of the halls at Kirkwood. Then when the project was finished, I got moved to the VA hospital in Iowa City. Overall I think that this was a great decision. It got me new job experience and I got to meet a lot of new people. Also the pay was a lot better and I got to work 40+ hour weeks. If I would of stayed at the Mill, then I would be not even close to where I am now financially. Also this opened up some new doors for me too, because becoming an electrician is definitely a possibility for me in the

One of the defining moments in Chile’s history was the fight for change for the working class against the Chilean government during the 1970s. In the midst of an upsurge of worker militancy, the 1970 presidential election was taking place. Running was Salvador Allende who represented the common people of Chile. Allende led the left-wing coalition Popular Unity (UP) and for many Chilean workers, the UP government embodied their aspirations for a better life. In Peter Winn’s book, Weavers of Revolution, he tells the story of the Chilean revolution through the eyes of the participants.…

Life in the Iron-Mills: A Woman in a Man’s World The year was 1848, a seemingly average year for most Americans, and Rebecca Harding Davis had just graduated from the Washington Female Seminary and moved back home to Wheeling, West Virginia to live with her family. Simultaneously, an unknown storm was brewing in Seneca Falls, New York, where Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were leading the first woman’s rights convention that would stamp history as the beginning of a long fight for gender equality (Tichi 28). Davis’s first published work, Life in the Iron-Mills, is a novella focused on the crippling social issues of the nineteenth century that plagued the working class. Most importantly, however, is Davis’s unveiling of the dull, exhausting, and abused existence of women belonging to such a caste.…

Chapter 6, “When Farmers Shut Off the Machinery”, by Brian A. Devore, is about farmers who have resulted in using what they see on their own farm and to observe changes to decide what is best rather than jumping to conclusions and possibly trying to use the newest silver-bullet fix. Many different things approaches were used in the chapter. David Podoll keeps track of the weeds near his farm. Unlike most farmers who would see these weeds and spray them, Podoll keeps them as the weeds are a home for the larvae of the Painted Lady butterfly. The butterfly larvae will feed on the weeds and naturally keep the weed population in check.…

At the start of my junior year, I realized that I needed to volunteer my time more than just the occasional “Community Project” that I did with my school’s Student Leadership Program. My mother gave me the idea of working at the Awana Club, a club for children from Pre-K up to 5th grade, which focuses on the Bible and creation of friendships. To a sixteen year old who thought kids were the spawns of Satan himself, Awana sounded like the worst possible place to volunteer. But, my mother is very persistent.…

As I walked into the small building, that in fact looked very enormous at the time, I began to anticipate every answer I would give to the person who interviewed me, so that to them, I would at least seem prepared. Although I had practiced my interviewing skills that very morning, I felt anxious and worried. Not knowing what to expect, many different scenarios ran through my mind, all of which weren't making my situation any better. Questions after questions were asked, all which seemed impossible for me to answer, and I felt as though I blew the whole thing. After the interview, many days passed by, and I had convinced myself that I did not get job.…

A few weeks ago, I found myself on the second floor of the North end of the Unity Health Hospital, dressed in the nicest button-up shirt and dress pants I own, shaking so hard that my folder, which held my resume, cover letter, two pens, notebook paper and a cheesy motivational quote stuck to the inside cover, nearly fell out of my hands. My first job interview was an experience that I will never forget. My anxiety reached the point of exacerbation during the fifteen minutes that I spent in the empty lobby. I had intentionally arrived fifteen minutes earlier than my appointed time and was only accompanied by my own thoughts, which were fraught with worry. Had I arrived too early?…
