Naval Academy Strengths

The Naval Academy is often described as a "leadership laboratory," and I have found this statement to be true; my experiences at the Naval Academy have greatly impacted my development as a leader. After the past two and a half years, through various experiences, I have made many developments as a leader and I have a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. My two main strengths as a leader include high emotional intelligence and self-discipline. In regards to emotional intelligence, on the self-assessment, I received a score of 81/100, which represents a relatively high emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence involves being able to understand your own emotions and the emotions of others. In areas such as self-awareness, I scored well, showing that I am able to understand my emotions and react accordingly to them. Likewise, I also scored well in social skills, showing that I can comprehend the emotions of others in different social settings. Having a relatively high emotional intelligence has helped me in many situations, such as being able to recognize if one of my plebes is not feeling well, or if a company mate is upset with me. My strength of being self-disciplined stems from my value …show more content…
I believe that these goals directly speak to my weaknesses as a leader. Taking more risks in regards to leadership opportunities can include putting myself up for battalion level or brigade-level leadership billets. It can also include leadership opportunities that do not require a billet, such as assigning myself a troublesome underclassman and taking the time to mentor them. This will force me to be confident in my capabilities as a leader. This will also force me to break out of my comfort zone as an

Emotional intelligence is the ability to manage emotions in such a way that promotes positive outcomes in one’s life. Emotional intelligence also refers to a specific set of cognitive abilities associated with emotions. Intelligence is defined by Wechsler as “the aggregate or global capacity to of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with his or her environment.” (pg. 2). Based off of Wechsler’s definition of intelligence, I do consider emotional intelligence (EI) to be a true form of intelligence, because accurately managing one’s emotions is vital towards acting purposefully, thinking rationally, and dealing with his/her environment.…

I never really considered going to the Naval Academy until I was contacted by the volleyball coaches this spring. Initially, I dismissed the email, but then my father told me about the academic excellence and character development of the Academy, and I decided to look further into it. In April, I had the privilege to visit the Yard and witness the character of the Brigade and experience the dedication of each Midshipman to becoming the best version of him or herself in athletics, academics, character, and leadership. Regardless of who was nearby, they all displayed remarkable integrity by constantly to striving for perfection in every action. After seeing the fervent spirit of the Brigade, I knew that I wanted to be a part of the community and that it would be the best institution to help me become the best version of myself.…

The United States Military Academy has upheld the reputation of generating the world’s foremost military officers for over 200 years because the institution not only educates cadets in military strategy and battle tactics but instills in each graduated officer the values necessary to be a leader of character. The values necessary to be prepared for a career of excellence and service to the Nation in the United States Army are Duty, Honor, and Country. My interest in the Naval Academy came later than most. It began when I entered the Yard on May 24, 2016, and continued to grow as I stepped into Bancroft Hall and read the names of true American heroes who have given their life to the United States of America. I quickly realized that the atmosphere I would be immersed in for four years would be filled with like-minded, motivated people who would help develop and maximize my leadership skills. For the majority of my life, I have looked upon leaders in the game of golf like Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, and most recently Jordan Spieth.…

My interest in the Naval Academy and the fleet began as just another college option. I have not had any family member serve in the Navy and was rather indifferent to military service, other than my admiration for the men and women who serve. As I continued to explore my options, the Naval Academy remained on the backburner until I visited for the summer STEM program two years ago. As soon as I first walked on post, I instantly knew I loved it--the beautiful old architecture, the shimmering blue water, and the white-clad Midshipmen marching crisply down Stribbling. This past summer, when I visited again for NASS, I decided the Naval Academy was the one for me.…

Naval Academy is not an elite college; it is first and foremost a branch of the U.S. military-it taxes parents, siblings, and participants if they do not understand what they were signing up for” (Lepla, 2007, p.2). However, this cannot be further from the truth. The Naval Academy’s Superintendent has made it clear that he puts education at the forefront of Midshipmen development, while understanding that each individual will lead during a time of conflict and preparation. As a student, you are setup for success with endless resources at your disposal, and teachers are mandated to be available for “extra instruction”…

My career aspirations can be summarized by two goals. I believe I am called to fly helicopters for the United States Coast Guard, and eventually serve in this nation's legislative branch. I am currently applying for financial aid to assist me in getting my American Government degree from Florida Memorial University and being accepted into the CSPI program there. After a career in the Coast Guard I will then pursue my burden to better this country with through the amazing system we are blessed with in America.…

Before the summer of my sophomore year, I had not thought about my post high school plans beyond knowing I would like to attend college. However, I attended a STEM camp at Valparaiso University in Indiana where I met former astronaut and Naval Academy graduate, Ken Ham. He inspired me to not only begin my own flight training, but to start investigating the Naval Academy. The more I learned about the Naval Academy and the different opportunities that serving as an officer in the military presented, the more determined I became to attend. I understand that the decision to attend a service academy is not to be taken lightly.…

My leadership style assessment results were 8 (high) – concern for people and 4 (low) – concern for task. According to the assessment; task-orientation is concerned with getting the job done, while people-orientation focuses on group interactions and the needs of the individual members. The best leaders are ones that can balance their task / people orientation, which would equate a high score for both categories. My rating according to the assessment indicates that I’m overly laissez-faire.…

I choose to take a different outlook, I believe that true leadership is taking what the military gives you and making better people out of them. Resulting in better sailors and finally, the outcome is an elite fighting force that works as a team and can accomplish any task, including the ones that they themselves do not believe they can do. An area of Applied Psychology 1 that has captured my interest is the field of educational psychology. This field of study is interested with children and young adults in educational and early years’ settings (British Psychology Society (BPS), 2016). This has captured my interest as children are especially vulnerable during school years, due to a variety of reasons such as low self esteem. This could be due to learning difficulties such as dyslexia and behaviourial problems. I believe that I would find it rewarding to work with children to help them develop their own skills and abilities in regards to the obstacles shown early in their life.…

Some improvements that I can make to my overall emotional intelligence could be learning to take responsibility for my actions. This is a huge deal for me as I have had instances in the past where my emotions have gotten the better of me and have not handled situations in a correct manner. By learning to take responsibility of my actions, I will be able to approach situations in a different manner and hopefully in a more stable emotional mindset. The other area in which I could improve would be by separating my emotions from my actions, so thinking more with my brain rather then what my emotions are saying. This will aid me in making more logical decisions which will attempt to have the best outcome long…
