Why I Burned?

Improved Essays
It was a Monday morning and I was in the shower getting ready to start my day when I started to smell something abnormal, though, I thought it was simply the neighbor outside smoking but once I opened the bath room door a big cloud of smoke cam. All of a sudden I was trapped and the only way to get out of the fire that was soon about to reach me was to walk through it if I had any intentions of living. Then I heard my cat crying and that’s when I knew I had to get my cat and myself out of the house. After planning my escape route I grabbed my cat and ran, well not thinking clearly I trip and hit my head on the end table now I’m bleeding really bad from my head and the smoke is now starting to affect me and my breath is getting shorter. I had …show more content…
Arriving at the hospital the nurses did not waste anytime I was rushed into a room and a nurse walked in she spent what felt like forever explain what her job was. She said “I’m a burn care nurse I treat patients who have been burned.” She spent more time telling me what the plan was starting from the normal treatment. She told me that my burns cover my whole feet and up my legs. Before I processed what she said before they provided me with an oxygen mask telling me that it’s only going to make sure I get enough oxygen. With all the doctors running around it’s hard to focus on what they are trying to tell me. Next thing I know I’m getting a needle shoved in my arm filled with fluids but they state it’s only to restore the fluid and electrolyte balance. Everything is happening at such a fast pace doctors then start throwing blankets onto of me but I’m not cold but they said it is to create a warm environment for the burns. While sitting there waiting for the next part more doctors run and hook up vials of clear liquid to my I.V. doctors are warning me that it’s just medicine to stop the pain and settle my anxiety. Once I was finally in bed and everyone one done swarming around me doctors would walk in and random time to see if I was still …show more content…
My burn nurse came back and checked everything over and came to tell me what the future plans are going to be. My burn nurse told me she has been talking with an anesthesiologist later that morning the anesthesiologist came to talk about the medical plan. She told me a little about herself and how she can help me she stated, “Anesthesiologists are primarily responsible for the safety and well-being of patients before, during and after surgery.” Her responsibilities include placing me in the state of controlled unconsciousness called 'general anesthesia ', the provision of 'regional anesthetics ' where only a portion of the body is made numb, when indicated for the relief of pain or anxiety. My anesthesiologist finally got to the point saying I am going to need reconstructive surgery which is also going to incorporate a skin graft. While the anesthesiologist is looking over my burns she is explaining what a skin graft consists of, she says, “it is a surgical operation in which pieces of healthy skin is transplanted to a new place of the body (Stang)”. The doctors are saying the skin graft is going to take place as soon as it can and she was going to send other doctors to come check me out. They also informed me that

Usually, as a standard post-op order set, surgeons would include diet, incision site dressing care, medications, and Foley catheter removal time. One day morning, a two- day post-op patient was running a fever with an oral temperature of 101.2. The primary nurse was an ADN new graduate; she immediately responded with checking the medication orders and administering the patient a Tylenol 500 mg tablet as indicated. When she rechecked the temperature one hour later, the oral temperature was 100.8. Then, she lowered the room temperature and applied some ice packs.…

Do you recommend journaling to your patients? If not, why not? I have not talked with my patients about journaling, I have, on the other hand, stressed the importance have putting a folder together that would include medication’s they take, and updating the list the first day of the month, also to include any surgeries, procedures along with a list of any thing they may have been diagnosed with. I work in the ER, and I can’t tell you how many people I see who have no idea the names of the medications they are on and why they are taking them. Some times a family member will come with the patient to the ER, the patient is unable to speak, and when I ask them some simple questions like, “ what surgeries have they had in the past?”, they have…
