Learning a new language is such a roller coaster, it has so many ups and downs, and I understand those ups and down because I had to and sometimes still have to go through them. My experiences learning English is another reason why I want to teach ELL. I believe that I have an understanding and compassion for these students that other people may not have because they don’t understand what it is like to be thrown into a classroom full of people speaking a language completely unfamiliar to you. They don’t understand the frustration of being mute when there is so much that needs to be said. The awful feeling when you finally decide to speak and people laugh because of your mistakes or accent, but I do, I do understand these feelings. I understand how difficult it is to come to a country with a different culture, a different live style and a different language. I understand the work that takes to overcome the language barrier and I think I can help children understand that with work and effort it is possible to break down that barrier; it is possible to overcome those fears and learn. I want them to know that it is ok to make mistakes while learning. I want them to “come out of their shells”. I want to help them to be successful at
