I’ve had many positive experiences in my life, but my experience joining the Air Force and completing Basic Training had the greatest impact. I did not take high school seriously, because I signed to join the Air Force in my junior year of high school. Since I knew where I was going, I did not feel the need to apply myself in all my classes. I did just enough to graduate high school. Then September came, the month I left to Basic Military Training. During this time, I was broken down from the person I was, and they built me to be a better person. We went through hell and back, during the 2 and a half months we were there. I felt relieved when we graduated. After all the sweat and tears, I am finally able to say, “I am an honorable American Airman.”

I signed my contract to join the military when I was only a junior in high school. I knew that college wasn’t for me, so I decided to stay out of trouble and do just enough to get by. My friends were really stressed when it came to applying to college and studying for the SATs. I didn’t have those worries at all. I knew, once I signed that contract, there was no going back. I did the best I could, especially when it came to the honor and AP classes I took. I barely passed the classes I had taken, but I was able to pass 2 out of the 3 AP tests. During the last few months of school, I got hired at Sea World San Diego. I didn’t want to spend the entire summer doing nothing. I started working full time in May 2013 and I worked until I left for basic training in September 2013. And that was when I began my military journey. I arrived to Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas on September 17, 2013. It was horrible for the next 8 and a half weeks, but ended with a delightful reward of completing the training.
