Personal Narrative: My Experience At Tamiami Pool

When I was a a freshman at a public school in Miami, my parents wanted me to play a sport. They 'd been pressuring me the whole summer to play a sport, until I finally gave in and reluctantly decided to pick up swimming since I hate the feeling of sweat. At my school they did 't have a swimming team so I joined a local club swim team. Five days a week the team and I practiced at Tamiami Pool (public olympic size pool) coached by a college student named Murphy. The coach was a skinny, tall, and tan skinned young man with a short haircut. He was a relaxed man which really surprised me because i expected a tough and demanding coach. The first time I got in the pool I was embarrassed at how slow i was going, seeing as kids younger than me swam faster with just their legs. As months passed by i started progressing until i was able to practice with a tougher and faster group. This group that I practiced with was with the same coach, but much more a demanding practice. They made me run two to three miles everyday and …show more content…
There I met many friends who I got along with throughout the rest of my years there. Although after the season ended, I was introduced to the sport of water polo which I found much more fun than just swimming so i started doing that as well. Being a student at Columbus I noticed many things. First, the students and overall ambiance of the school was friendly and inviting. Unlike at Belen where students had cliques and were exclusive. Also the students at Columbus weren 't pretentious. Second, the school was much more academically rigorous than my previous school. I had to work harder than ever before. Third, I took advantage of the religious side of the school and got confirmed through the Catholic Church via Columbus. Religion also became one of my best and favorites subjects in school since it was a mandatory class that I had to take every

In the past four years, I have had many experiences with family, friends and an extreme amount of clubs, activities, and home life occasions I am involved in. But in all honesty sports have taught me a lot about people, life and even myself. I have been a part of many teams in my lifetime and played several abstract sports, but at Summit Academy High School the sports are very unique. There are mixed attitudes towards the teams, players and coaches that you would not see at any other school. But I like to call them obstacles and challenges.…

The Hudson Park Estates pool has been one of the best parts of my move to Hudson. Before here, I never knew my neighbors, but here I not only have friends, but also teammates and coworkers. The pool is a vibrant community and I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of it. Joining the swim team was a scary step for me to take, but I ended up befriending some amazing people, many of which I ended up working alongside during high school as lifeguards. Everyone here is made to feel welcome and it’s been such a life-changing…

After going to these few days of practice, I learned how to do a front jump (forward jump and dive), back jump (backwards dive), and approach (3 steps to the diving board). However, before even starting to dive, I had to face my fear of the fact that I was falling into a pool, whether it be forward or backwards. We tried one technique to get us use to going into the pool backwards; we were to lay head first on top of a folded up tumbling mat, then extend our arms out straight and hold them together at the fingertips as if we were diving in already. Next, we had to keep our legs straight and on the count of three one of our two coaches pushed us in backwards, while the other would watch how we performed the dive from the side. Joining this team, even if it was for less than a week, was one of the best decisions I have ever made.…

Although, doing the best you can is important, I would not consider it to be the main purpose of sports. According to Joan Duda, the purpose of sport is broken down into seven categories: “sport should (a) teach the value of mastery and cooperation, (b) show people how to be physically active for life, (c) make good citizens, (d) make people competitive, (e) help individuals obtain a high status career, (f) enhance self-esteem, (g) show people how to get ahead and increase their social status” (Duda, 1989). These are all important factors of the purpose of sport; Personally, I think of sports as an outlet; to step away from reality and participate in an activity that you enjoy. This idea came into realization my junior year of high school.…

My freshman year of high school I went out for softball. I had loved softball when I was younger and had always been the star of the team. I wasn’t expecting to come in and be a hot shot, but I also wasn’t expecting to be the bottom man of the totem pole. We had a large team and the coaches knew that to get everyone playing time they would need to have some of us suit up for the first game and save others for a different game that would be easier. I was thrilled when coach said my name in the list of those suiting up for the first game regardless it was for the junior varsity team.…

I knew I wanted a place where I could expand my horizons, meet new people, and leave with a better understanding of the world and its cultures. Out of my top three college choices, the University of Toledo was the most diverse. The university is large enough to attract students from all over the nation and other countries, while maintaining the culture of Toledo itself. I am very interested in studying abroad, and the University of Toledo has wonderful programs for this. Most recently, the campus had International Week which was very fun and interesting.…

Heywood Broun said, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” Consequently, I believe that being on my high school swim team was the one of the biggest revelations of my character. When I entered high school, I had to play a sport because it was my mom’s rule, “you will participate in minimally one sport”. As a result, my brother played football, ran track, and swam.…

Growing up, I ran from place to place because I had a patience management problem. I did not like waiting or moving unwillingly slow, but I especially did not like getting somewhere late. Thus, my choice of transportation at the time, due to age limitations, was running. In elementary school, I ran just as much as most kids and just as fast. In sixth grade, I had the opportunity to go out for the track and field team, but I did not.…
