When starting a group I introduce the group topic and myself, explain and hand out everything needed, and emphasized respect for others during the group, this is how I feel I created the sacred space. Stating some rules of respecting others, not saying negative things if someone is sharing something personal, offer support are a few rules that help create common ground. At Sheppard Pratt, it was important for adolescents to not feel alone and to have their feelings validated. So I frequently asked group members to share what they are working on in the hospital or, if they were comfortable with it, to share what brought them to the hospital; in doing this it helped others realize they are not alone and created common ground between peers. For example if a patient opened up in group that she self harms, this could really help someone else struggling with the same thoughts to go to her and ask what helps them cope with self injurious
