My Experience At Roberto Meier's Classroom

The second time I entered Mr. Meier and Mrs. Dickerson’s classroom, I felt excited to see the children again. Although I was unable to come for Halloween, I was prepared to begin asking questions about their costumes and celebrations during lunchtime. I was unable to do this, however, as Mr. Meier suggested I visit a different class during lunch. Beneficially, I was able to experience other classrooms rather than sit with the children while they silently watch a movie. It should be noted that Mr. Meier and Mrs. Dickerson allow the children to eat lunch in the classroom and watch movies as a special privilege. Taking Mr. Meier’s suggestion, I followed a different fourth grade class to music. The music class I spent the lesson with was enormous. The class was mixed of perhaps three fourth grade classes as well as two or three kindergarten classes. There were two teachers in the room, however, the music teacher was the …show more content…
Once there, I continued my routine of walking around desks during the math lesson and helping students to focus on Mr. Meier and provide one-to-one instruction for children having difficulties. Interestingly, for the first time since beginning my experience at Roberto Clemente, I witnessed a teacher giving out a STRONG ticket to a student who was working hard and volunteering to answer questions aloud. Roberto Clemente’s acronym of characteristics for students to emulate reminds me of the SPARK students introduced in The Prize. SPARK is an acronym for Seek knowledge, Pursue justice, Act as a team, Reach for excellence, Keeping Going (Russakoff, 2016). Correspondingly, STRONG stands for Successful, Team player, Respectful, Optimistic, Nice to others, Great. Both acronyms help students at their respective schools develop a sense of unanimity and create a unified school identity.
