The majority of the people I encounter at my school have a complete lack of care when it comes to important social issues. To even mention words like feminism or Black Lives Matter brings eyerolls and headshakes from various parts of the classroom.But I enjoy discussing and thinking critically about these issues. Discussions of social conflicts that are pervasive in our community are important and necessary. Martin Luther King Jr once said that “our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” We can’t simply ignore having these discussions because they’re irrelevant and inconvenient to us. This is why I want to attend TASP. I want to engage in meaningful and significant conversations with other intellectual people. When I first heard about TASP from my friends, I was skeptical at first. An organization that holds summer programs for exciting and critical topics seemed too good to be true. I’ve been looking for something that will intellectually challenge my mind while also allowing me to meet other amazing and interesting people who are passionate about social justice. As an individual, I am constantly growing, learning new things, and becoming a better person. Being able to attend a program filled with a group of diverse people will allow me to learn more about the world and what it means to have a certain identity in today’s society. I am also hoping to engage in discussions that intellectually challenge me. From the environment of TASP, I would also like to increase my desire for education and learning about people in society. The seminar I hope to attend, “Black Lives Matter,” will help me understand the plight of black people throughout history and today and then I could further use this knowledge that I gained to create a better world for people of all
