I grew up in an 800 square feet house with my family of four. My mother stayed home with my sister and I, while my father worked up to 80 hours per week in a factory to support us. I did not know it at the time, but I did not live in the safest town. In my first grade class, nearly every student received a little yellow paper card for lunch. I had no idea what that card meant at the time, but one day, my name was called out to receive one. I ran outside to my mom who was waiting to pick me up from school, and yelled “I got my card today, mom!” She told me years later that she was so embarrassed, but she could not help but laugh due to my excitement. I would find out years later that the card meant I qualified for free lunch. At this elementary school, my peers at my elementary school often had behavioral problems due to what they experienced at home. It was also common for children to fall asleep in class, because their home lives did not allow for a good night’s rest.
Then, my parents decided we were going to move when I was nearing the end of my 4th grade year. My family and I moved to a middle to upper middle class suburb. My parents wanted to provide us with a better education and a safer area. When I went to my new school for the first time, I could not believe how drastically different it was.
