My understanding of institutional racism is that our society is run by the dominant group, who are in charge of the majority of the institutions, so therefore the institution cater to the dominant population. One of the resources would be the Paul Marcus interview. He described the example of the American culture being shaped around racism and oppression (Marcus, n.d.). He explained how there is this web of racism that people of color have to navigate through or eventually get stuck in because they are of color (Marcus, n.d.). Listening to Paul Marcus explain systemic racism really helped me with understanding how our society works and people of color get caught up in the cycle of systemic racism.
Another resource that has helped me is the video The Story We Tell. In this video, it showed how the American culture dominated everyone else. The immigrants that traveled from overseas had to conform to society to fit in but a consequence of this was losing their cultural identities (Cheng, 2003).
