It was a dark, snowy morning in Houghton, New York. Vans were loaded with suitcases and people who echoed goodbyes as they pulled away from the silent college campus. One individual, a music major sat in one of the vans looking sheepishly behind her but ready for the next adventure. This music major, as you might have guessed is me. For the last 3 months, I have been out of the music building, out of North America, and out of my intensely scheduled life. I lived in Tanzania, East Africa studying and learning another culture, quite opposite to my own. After a year of preparation and an 18-hour flight, I had very little expectations to what my time in Tanzania would look like. I had no idea what we would be doing or how I would change by the end but I knew that I had to get out of Houghton for a few months. As soon as I got to Houghton, I knew that I wanted to study abroad but some of my music professors tried to discourage me in fear that I would lose all that I had worked for with my instrument and musicality. My first 2 years at Houghton in the music building were really rough for me and I wanted to get away from it all. I don’t mean to bash the music building or staff in any way, or intend to complain about it in this paper, but there were definitely serious problems with past leadership that negatively affected many of us music students.
