When I began work at Masonic Homes I was very nervous because I had not done elementary or middle school work since I was that age. I was not aware of how much things had changed since then. I believe my apprehension was felt by the children and they seemed wary of me too as I helped them with their work. Most of what I did that day consisted of helping a few students with their math and science homework. As time progressed, working with the children became easier and I learned how to communicate with them to help them.

For one child it might have been better if they worked through the problems on their own. Whereas others needed more help and I had to get creative when helping them study for quizzes and tests. For example, I had one student who was studying for his science test and could not remember which clouds were the right ones. In response to this obstacle, I had him come up with phrases which reminded him of the cloud (e.g. this is a cloud a picnic cloud).
