I remember my freshman year in college. I completed an assignment and when the paper was returned there was the grade standing in my face...Capitalized, Bold in Red. I made a C. I called my Uncle Sonny and I cried. The funny thing is he was not sympathetic to me what so ever. This guy, my uncle on the other end of the phone, with his baritone voice, aggressively said, "Welcome to the World baby girl... 'Ain 't it Shit. '" I never saw the world of education the same any more after that day. I realized my best for high school was merely a filthy rag for college level work. This drove me as a student to do better than my expectations, to strive for something better than the rest consequently, my ultimate goal was better than the rest. My studying habits increased and my level of loyalty to prove that I was better than a C was my driving force. As an adult, I still have bulldog tenacity staring me in the face each morning, as I face another day. However, times have changed for the generation that stands... or should I say 'sits ' gazing at the world from another perspective. As this generation gathers in the classroom to greet their instructors much havoc breathes through the air; while, today 's generation meets the world with the notion of being superior simply because they exist, demanding instant gratification and happiness.
