Importance Of My Academic Advancement Program

Improved Essays
A year ago today I was filling out this same application contemplating what my dreams and aspirations were. I was naive and sheltered, unaware of what awaited me as I stepped into the “real” world. This past year has been a year of change, I am attending a school that has helped me come into my own personally, professionally, and academically. The things I have done this year would have been unimaginable to me a year ago. Personally I have grown through the culture shock I faced coming from a community where 97% of the inhabitants were Latino, to a place where people like me are less prominent. It has been an eye opening experience living with people with different backgrounds and customs. I have become more educated of the injustices that go far past the Latino community and discrimination many people face. I know now that I am not the same person I was last year, I have grown as an individual and matured, well not entirely. Many times it is not that I am afraid to ask for help, at times it is just difficult to know where to ask for help in such a big school. I was accustomed to have everything in one office at my high school, therefore seeking resources on campus was challenging. This was my issue until I joined AAP (Academic Advancement Program). Through this program at my school I was able to not only schedule appointments with counselors that work one on one, I have also been provided with tutoring from PLF’s (Peer Learning Facilitators) that have been vital in many of my classes. I have become eager to seek help outside of this program and step out of my comfort zone and go to office hours although it may be extremely intimidating. There are still times that I don 't know where to turn for help but as I go I am asking questions and seeking resources that can propel me to succeed on my

It’s made me think harder and work harder, it’s pushed me out of my comfort zone, and ultimately has made me a different, but better person. I’ve become someone that sets a goal, and persistently strives to reach that goal, even when it’s hard and there seems to be no gain from trying. I’ve become someone who can work with a group of people that are different than each other, because we are not all that different. I can talk about business with confidence, I can speak in front of a group of people, and I can tell the difference between a Brahman and an Angus. I’ve truly learned and experienced more than I ever thought possible, all because I joined FFA five long years…

I think I should be a part of Mortar Board because I have spent the entirety of my college career working to strengthen my skills in leadership and build on my character. I am very dedicated to my studies, and I make it a priority to excel in all of my classes. While I am already involved in many activities on campus, I am always careful to decide whether I have the time to give to a new organization before joining. I am well aware of the time requirements and level of commitment that would be expected of me as a member of Mortar Board, and I am both able and willing to commit. I think I would be a great addition to Mortar Board because scholarship, leadership, and service are all aspects of my life that are very important to me.…

I feel like I am a good candidate for this scholarship because, as a senior, any and all money earned and received will help me ease the burden of attending college. My goal throughout my whole childhood was to receive a full ride scholarship to the college of my dreams; however, as time has gone on and I have matured I have come to the realization that, that dream is not as achievable as I once believed it to be. I have worked hard, inside and outside of the classroom, making the grades and creating the resume that colleges are looking for, and in response I have been offered tuition waivers. Which ultimately means I am still responsible for paying for my books, room and board, part of the tuition cost, and mandatory fees.…

Many people characterize their home as safe, secure, or at least comforting. My home was a bit … different. After leaving their home in Nigeria, my parents had to jump from home to home constantly moving me and my family until they could learn how to properly settle in America. My parents were very caring and helpful and kept trying to move us to places where we would have a chance at success. When we finally settled their seemed to only be one logical thing to do... help other immigrants settle here!…

It was at seven year old when my father left my mother and I to find work in the United States. He proceeded to work day and night for the next five years until he was able to bring our family together again. I had never heard of Mexicans being labeled as lazy, and it 's sometimes hard to believe what others might say about you simply because of your ethnicity. The video "i’m latino, but i’m not…" raised my awareness about several stereotypes about Mexicans. Throughout my experiences I have learned, stereotypes can come from the deepest, darkest most ignorant parts of people, so I simply ignore them.…

As I came to college, my family and I anticipated I would be following a simple mold of a conscientious student. One that is highly focused in some limited number of long term goals. Don 't get me wrong, this only meant that I had high expectations out of my college education. For some people, this path leads them to great success. But, I slowly realized my vision of success needed to have stories from different roads and bridges, than just one simple path.…

Growing up with a Chicano (Mexican-American) and a Native-American background, I’ve experienced much of the fulfillment of being included with the URMs (Underrepresented minorities) experience. URMs is defined as African Americans, American Indians/Alaska Natives, and Latinos— who have historically comprised a minority of the U.S. population are growing in size and influence (nacme.org). Growing up in a small town, with primarily Caucasians, can really be intimidating, as most minorities are looked down upon as going nowhere and having no goals coming from a small town. The residence I grew up was located in a small country town, which not many minorities would choose to live in. The reason for this, is because in most small towns, the most prominent race is Caucasians.…

As a child of immigrant parents, whom never passed secondary education, I had been told several times by my mother, “I came here so you can have the opportunities I never had.” I never took her words in for consideration. Up to this point in my college education, life has been and up and down ride, definitely not what I had envisioned.
