My Experience As An Immigrant Student

Hello Ms. GG!

This is Lizeth. I am emailing you to update you on what I've been up to lately. Last week, my counselor talked to me about graduation. I know that it seems too far to start thinking about it, but he said that graduating Hispanic students in CCSD get to participate in the Hispanic Graduation Ceremony. He told me that he would like to nominate me to be a speaker at the graduation next year! Additionally, he said he would like me to write a short book about my experience as a immigrant student who strives for excellence! Isn't that incredible? I have the entire summer to write it. I do not know if it will be published as a physical book or just in an electronic form, but I am still honored to do so.

Now, let me tell you, I have never been so excited for a summer vacation. Starting off on June 17-19, I will be at a leadership camp in Mt. Potosi. On the day I return, I have a couple hours to get ready to catch my flight to Puerto Rico! I sent you an invitation to

That month I will be on "ambitious-mode" as I will be hunting down scholarship websites. I applied for a leadership camp at the University of Denver and depending if I am admitted and a recipient of the scholarship, I will be flying to Denver to attend the camp the last week of July. If I am not admitted, I will be going to the San Diego University for the annual Josten's Yearbook Camp, also held on the last week of July. I hope that in July and August I am able to travel to nearby states to explore college campuses.

In my "downtime," I plan to write my book. Also, I am excited for my high school summer reading. Since I'll be taking Advanced Placement English Literature next year, my summer assignment is to read George Orwell's 1984. I've previously read Animal Farm and some of his essays and his work is phenomenal. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of 1984!

But tell me, how were your last few days of

The power of knowledge is something every human should attain, but it does not always come at an ease. In Bich Minh Nguyen’s, “ The Good Immigrant Student,” she writes about the hardships and racism she endures while trying to receive a good education. Frederick Douglas, a former slave and author of, “ Learning to read and Write”, describes his determination to be literate, while at the same time explains the obstacles he had to overcome. Both Nguyen and Douglass use imagery, include personal anecdotes, and create tone, to explain how in order to receive an education hierarchies are maintained in the process.…

Since an early age, I have always wanted to be involved with health sciences, and I have work as hard as I can to accomplish this dream. I was born into a Hispanic family, and raised in way that puts values ahead of money or economic status. I did not enjoy the luxuries that many of my friends had, but I was taught very strong principles. My father always taught me to work hard no matter what, weather it was for a job, school or a hobby. He always told me that I will encounter many rocks in my path, but that it would be up to me to stay behind that rock and let the rock defeat me, or I could just find a way to continue on my path until the next rock.…

Narrative Essay It was at the beginning of my senior year when my counselor started urging my senior class to start thinking about what universities we wanted to apply to. Feeling like an outsider in a place you consider home, is one of the struggles that to this day I still live with. June 8, 1996 was the beginning of the hectic journey of my life, I was only a year and three months when my mother made the decision to pack up and move to the United States, where my father had been living with my two older sibling. A small two bedroom house located in Galveston Texas is what my family would call home for the next couple of years. As the youngest child out of my four siblings, people always thought of my life to be perfect and spoiled; which in true honesty was nothing like that.…
