My Experience As A Second-Year Transfer Student

Improved Essays
When I first came to the University of Texas, I entered as a second-year transfer student. I wasn’t entirely sure of what I would major in, so I decided to transfer into the the school of undergraduate studies. In this school, I received very little help through advising and was left to figure out my path alone. This was hard at first, especially because I had to adjust to a new school, while also stressed and concerned about where I would end up. Middle school can be an odd and rough time for kids, as they change from being sheltered youth to responsible young adults. I failed miserably at handling that transition. The classes taught in middle school were supposed to be easy, especially now that I look in retrospect. Yet, I regularly brought home B’s and low A’s, at best, on my report card. I had barely challenged myself in middle school, if at all.…

During Summer 2014, I was accepted into the Prairie View A&M University Research Experience High School (REH) program. During this program, I worked closely with Dr. Branch-Vital and 2 of her graduate students to learn the process of conducting research. Upon the completion of the program, I completed a research poster titled: Examining Factors Contributing to BMI Among African American Freshman Students at a HBCU in a Rural Area. My experience in this program allowed me to get a broader understanding of the Kinesiology (then Human Performance) major. After I completed the program I began to fall in love with the major and ultimately the program made my decision to declare my major as Kinesiology.…

I started attending Lone star college right after high school, at first, I began with the typical high school graduate state of mind, which was that college was going to be a breeze and that it would all be fun and games; more worried about what was going on in my social life rather than studying the books. Especially since I had no real responsibilities to handle or much life experience. Around my first year of college, I started dating this girl and not long after we conceived our first son. Once this happened, my focus slowly shifted from school to working a full-time job at a welding shop in order to provide for my family. I still tried to attend class but was unable to find the balance between work, school and family and this reflected my grades.…

Halfway through my first semester at UCF, I feel a lot less optimistic than I did when first starting out. As a starry-eyed freshman, I was determined to do my absolute best, but I’ve somehow lost sight of that goal along the way, preferring to binge-watch Japanese shows, write song lyrics, avoid doing laundry, and order things I really don’t need from eBay. Since I find that extremely entertaining, it’s also become quite obvious that my sense of humor has deteriorated to nothing. However, I have still managed to achieve most of my more concrete academic goals, such as maintaining my GPA and choosing a major.…

I was born in Germany with a German mother and an American father. The benefit of being born into a German family and living in Europe for the first ten years of my life was the greatest privilege I experienced throughout my sixteen years of living. However, my father was in the military at the time causing for a slight pressure to always be prevalent for the duration of my younger years. This mainly revolved around the fact that my sister was able to grow up in Germany and I wanted that same opportunity. Soon after these aspirations were formed, they became mere dreams that never would be fulfilled because my dad was given orders to either move to Mississippi or Oklahoma, which both deemed to be the middle-of-nowhere.…
