I joined NERA seeking to learn more about applying to medical schools. I applied to NERA III to work as a research assistant. I worked on a research project that studied a treatment to help diabetes patients. I helped in taking care of research subjects. I observed and assisted in sacrificing rats and slicing their brains along with reviewing slices under the microscope and reporting findings. After 6 weeks of assisting with this research, I completed a report that I presented to faculty at NJMS. This was a great hands-on experience for me to work with organs, which encouraged me to pursue a career in

I shadowed an orthopedic physician assistant and learned about what they do on a daily basis. While there I got to see the role that he plays in a patients care and how him and the surgeon work together as a team. I saw his perform pre and post surgical visits, aspirations and injections, interpret radiology reports, and evaluate and treat injuries. I also had the opportunity to spend about 20 hours in the operating room in which I watched both the surgeon and physician assistant perform a variety of surgeries such as total knee and hip arthroscopy’s, ACL reconstructions, knee scopes, etc.…

My job as a Resident Advisor is to create an environment that is welcoming to all of my residents. This task is both exciting and daunting since one can have a floor made up of residents coming from all over the country, representing different backgrounds and socioeconomic upbringings. To build this environment you must get to know the residents and develop a true understanding of the background and diversity they bring to the floor. One of the moments that stuck out to me while trying to build this environment came from a conversation about Indian dance and the Punjabi culture. I was with a resident checking to see how she was adjusting to being away from home when she told how she found her fit on this team called Buckeye Bhangra.…

During my time as a volunteer in the Union Gospel Mission, I realized how crucial each individual’s role is towards the team. Our collective mission is to provide dental care for underserved communities, but this cannot be done without the collective effort of each person in our team. The dentist is obviously a key figure in our team, but so are the assistants, hygienist and the front desk manager. We each have a very crucial role in our team and would not be as effective serving the patient without each other. As a volunteer, I was responsible for the duties of a dental assistant.…

As I entered my senior year of undergrad, I began looking for an opportunity to work with people requiring any form of health care assistance. Luckily, I came across an opening for a Personal Care Assistant (PCA) position in the school newspaper. At the time, I didn’t know exactly what a PCA was, but I knew I wanted to work one-on-one with patients, and this job would allow me to do exactly that. After I went through all the training that was required, it was finally time to meet my client. The only details my supervisor told me about my client were: his name, that I would be assisting in driving him around in his handicap accessible van, getting him dressed, monitoring him during his walking exercises, and that he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy as a child and was bound to a wheelchair.…

They are welcoming and kind human beings who are ready to help their residences, or any members of the Suffolk community, at any point of time. Personally, I aspire to become a Resident Assistant for multiple reasons. The first being that I thoroughly enjoy being friendly and kind. Being nice to people is a characteristic that is just instilled within me, which I believe is a good quality to possess while obtaining this position.…

As a Resident Advisor, I have supervisory responsibilities over the residents staying in Bromley Hall for athletic summer camps. Campers range from ages 8 to 18 years of age. There are three main tenets to Bromley Hall’s philosophy for resident advisors--effective communication, listening, and consistency-- all of which I believe I effectively model. I work with a team of eighteen other resident advisors to coordinate check-in and check-out procedures, night activities, and floor meetings for the campers. Ultimately, the most important responsibility I have is ensuring the safety and security of Bromley Hall and its residents.…
