My Experience As A Nonprofit Ministry

It is true ... sometimes the journey is what really matters. Over the past thirty-eight years, I have maintained a constant and certain academic, volunteer, and professional journey. Often (at times without realizing it), I have represented Jesus Christ. In being a servant-leader of Christ, I have also had many opportunities presented to me, which I have willingly accepted, to bring Christ’s message to those in need. It has been, and continues to be, a humbling and fulfilling journey. This journey provides for me a strong reality of my destiny and purpose. studies. My interest in this area of research also has a personal connection. In 1992, I founded a federally approved non-profit ministry to prisoners, ex-offenders, and their families. Birthed largely from my role as a correctional chaplain, my work among these marginalized members of society and in this non-profit ministry continues today. Offering life-changing ministry, resources and services including transitional housing, substance abuse treatment, and pastoral care and mentoring, it has been my life’s work over the years with this population that continues to provide further interest in researching PTSD in substance abusers. As a researcher, I hope to incorporate ideas and lessons learned from my research and experience into my private practice as a therapist and in published writings. Throughout my career as a minister I have sincerely enjoyed teaching. Upon graduating high school, I invested four years as an adjunct high school teacher in my church’s Christian school. Utilizing the Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) curriculum, this experience enabled me to develop strategies to engage students in the learning process in all content areas. In my career as a minister, I am continually

Nonprofit organizations should keep track and improve every area of the organizations in order to obtain the best results. By keeping tracking and improving, nonprofit organizations will maximize their net income which will help them to grow. Just in the same way, in order to make improvements, an organization should be listening to the outside world and it should respond to the outside world comments in order to give the organization a better shape.…

Obtaining federal tax-exempt status is somewhat of a mystery for my incorporated business owners. Gaining tax-exempt status for your nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization is necessary to reap the majority of the real benefits, such as access to grant money, income exemptions, property exemption, and tax-deductions for donations received. Therefore, it’s important to understand the steps to successfully apply for tax-exempt status. Planning and Forming a Nonprofit When forming a business that you plan on being a nonprofit you must plan the organization to not incur profits that benefit an individual and that also provides a public benefit.…

This week was about our volunteer experience and that is what I would like to talk about in my journal. I think that I went a bit non-traditional with doing volunteer cooking and cleaning for Malone’s indigent clients. I really did enjoy it though. My boss said he would rather me spend time within our company doing volunteer work than going elsewhere during business hours. I do not have the opportunity to do anything on weekends with my children being home and my husband having had a recent surgery.…

Harvey’s (1996) Ecological View of trauma helped me gaining insight to trauma treatment and adding a trauma-informed approach to addiction treatment. Harvey suggested taking into consideration of person, event, and environmental factors when understanding trauma. Each client varies in personality, coping abilities, race, cultural background, cognitive functioning, etc.; Each traumatic event might be different in types, duration, severity, the degree of violence, the extend of humiliation, etc.; Environmentally, victims’ support system, community, culture, political environment, and advocacy resources differs from one to another. These factors directly influence what questions are asked and what interventions are used in therapy. In residential…

We understand discipleship is crucial to the well being of Christians so there must be a plan in place for Christians to fully become disciples of Christ. I believe this is done through small group ministry. Scripture states, “We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all energy, which so powerfully works in me” (Col.1:28-29 NIV). We must strive to place people in small groups for true discipleship to take place.…

Only a few are out in our Father’s harvest field while volumes of others, as spectators, sit in the church watching. They have become distracted by good intentions. Let me share a story with you that I once heard a Chaplain relate to a few soldiers.”…

Three years ago I began my college journey here at Colorado Christian University focusing on a degree in Elementary Education and today I am almost finished with only two classes remaining. When I signed up for classes I was sure I knew what I wanted to study, I had a plan and could see it. Wow, was I mistaken! Here I am, three years later about to graduate with a degree in Biblical Studies, far different than what I had originally signed up for, and I couldn’t be happier with where God has taken me. Jeremiah 29:11 states: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”…
