I can communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. In addition, I am able to work well as part of a team and I also have the ability and motivation to work alone. In summary, I believe my qualifications and experience to date make me a good candidate for the role of a learning support assistant, with my own experience supporting my son, I have large reserves of patience and encouragement to give. As a child growing up I attended St Ignatius Church and made both my Holy Communion and Confirmation at this church. I have a good understanding of the Society of Jesus and it's ethos as missionaries. My son also attended the sixth form at St Ignatius College where he thrived as a result of the teaching. I took a position as an Instruction Assistant in an upper elementary class as I had never been in a Sped class and wanted to spend some time in one to make sure that it was where I wanted to be before I started investing in a credentialing program. Overall, I have loved every day of it thus far.…

I would be an asset in the program because I love interacting with people and learning new ways to improve their lives. I quickly discovered my passion for children and this field through the past two years of work experience at the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home (LBCH). I am fortunate enough to be the recreation leader, lifeguard, and math tutor of a diverse group of kids with heart-wrenching upbringings, circumstances, and for some, communication setbacks. My inner longing to provide more assistance to them communication-wise grows daily. The knowledge I am obtaining at ULM, the child-interaction skills I am gaining through the LBCH, and the God-given love and compassion for people all contribute and work simultaneously towards thriving…

The book Becoming a Helper by Marianne Schneider Corey and Gerald Corey dealt with the underlying theme of “Knowing Your Values.” There are no set in stone values that are crucial for helping, although trust is an important step that is necessary for the relationship. After trust is built, the helper can counsel the patient. The more the client grows the less guidance is needed. The values that are seen as necessary for helping relationships would be assuming responsibility for one’s actions, developing useful ways for dealing with stress, developing the potential to give and receive affection, how to be sensitive other's feelings, learning self-control, having a purpose for living, being open, honest, genuine, being content in one’s work,…

As I entered my senior year of undergrad, I began looking for an opportunity to work with people requiring any form of health care assistance. Luckily, I came across an opening for a Personal Care Assistant (PCA) position in the school newspaper. At the time, I didn’t know exactly what a PCA was, but I knew I wanted to work one-on-one with patients, and this job would allow me to do exactly that. After I went through all the training that was required, it was finally time to meet my client. The only details my supervisor told me about my client were: his name, that I would be assisting in driving him around in his handicap accessible van, getting him dressed, monitoring him during his walking exercises, and that he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy as a child and was bound to a wheelchair.…
