Importance Of My Internship Experience

In exactly 23 days I will be graduating from Salisbury University. It feels surreal to make such a statement and the fact that it is true excites me. I have seen myself grow as a leader, as a teacher and as person. Both of my internship experiences, as different as they were, each prepared me to take on a classroom of my own. My first internship experience at Parkside High School with Mr. Chris Burkhardt was an enjoyable one. When I first began working with Mr. Burkhardt I couldn’t tell if he liked me or if he was simply annoyed by me. At the conclusion of my eight weeks I came to the realization that we both enjoyed working with each other. Mr. Burkhardt made it hard on me from the start. The classes were difficult and the discipline was …show more content…
I did it all. I was thankful that he gave me the full experience. He allowed me to see what it is like as a teacher whether it be the administrative tasks or my classroom management. He pushed me in a way that strengthened my teaching ability. He told me what needed to be worked on and I worked on it. He would observe and tell me if he can see the progress and how I can solve my problem. I am grateful and thankful for Mr. Burkhardt and the growth I had under his supervision from January to mid-March and it carried with me to Mardela Middle and High School with Mrs. Germaine Marshall. As I entered my second internship experience I was confident in my teaching ability and ready to lead the class on the second day. But, I quickly learned that middle school and high school are two different monsters and although I felt great and confident about teaching high school, middle school …show more content…
Each mentor showed me techniques, tools and methods that I will use in my own classroom but at the same time both showed me ways I do not want to run my classroom. I have implemented their techniques and noticed that they did not fit my personality or who I am and who I will be as a teacher. Learning will never end and my teaching is soon to begin. Thank you Mrs. Cashman and Mrs. Dunn for all of your insight into the education world and everything you have taught us that goes beyond the

A few years ago I was asked by my department chair to teach an English Language Development (ELD) class. As I had only been teaching for a year, I was unfamiliar with the full requirements of the class and nervous to take on what I felt was a BIG responsibility. Once I accepted our dean of curriculum asked me to be the ELD advisor. I took two days to decide that with my family background, my grandfather picked fruit for a living and my mom picked and packed growing up, I could make the students understand that working hard in school and continuing their education post high school could help them get more out of life than merely staying at a menial job. My first year was difficult.…

More importantly, I remember how it made me feel to know that my instructors value myself and my peers enough to want to better themselves on our behalf. It made me as a student want to give as much effort as I could, as I knew that my teachers were doing the same for me. As I move forward in my own career as an educator, I hope that my students will also know that every effort that I give is to become a better teacher for them. In the music education field, there are so many workshops on teaching methods, composition and improvisation, movement in music, and so many more. I plan to participate in as many of these as I am able to, even if I am not required to do so.…
