Personal Narrative: My First Night After Math

First Night After Math:

For my first night of sleep, I had only gotten roughly 4 hours of rest with a quick interruption lasting around 5 minutes. I remember having a vivid dream, which is a usual occurrence for my sleeping habits. When I had first woken up, I had actually felt rejuvenated and well-rested. I had been able to perform well within my group meeting for another class project. However, I found myself feeling quite exhausted around 3:00 PM which prompted me to take a nap. Upon waking up from about a 60 minute nap I felt incredibly disoriented and groggy. I am led to believe that during the 4 hours of sleep I have been able to achieve both Slow-Wave Sleep and REM sleep, however, during this nap I hadn 't entered REM sleep. I am left to believe that I hadn 't entered REM sleep during this time because as (pg. 192) states, people who feel groggy and or confused were typically awoken within stage 4 SWS, whereas people who are awoken during REM sleep are alert and attentive. I was definitely far from the latter. After waking and feeling groggy, my cognitive abilities

During this night I had 2 vivid dreams, which is a characteristic of REM sleep, which can bee seen on (pg.193) of the text. I typically have very vivid dreams throughout the night. It should also be noted that most REM sleep cycles only last around 90 minutes (pg. 193) and I had been asleep for up to 9 hours during this night, prompting me to believe that I had undergone both REM sleep and of course SWS. I also don 't recall having any sleeping disturbances that had caused me to wake during the night aside from possibly waking when the dreams had ended. During this day I felt not only alert but also incredibly productive for majority of the day. It seems that this past night 's sleep played a very large role in my performance on this day, especially in comparison to the 1st night 's

Many scientists all over the world have all attempted to explain the physiological and psychological effects of peoples sleep and dreams. In spite of this, up until this century and with few exceptions, everyone has always thought that while a person slept, their body and brain went into an inactive state. It wasn’t until 1928 when a German psychiatrist that goes by the name of Hans Berger discovered electrical activity inside of the human brain and distinguished differences in these rhythms when the patients were sleeping and when they were awake. It wasn’t until many years later that rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, or dream sleep as some call it, was described. When the convincing evidence of this was provided from studies that the brain is very much active during REM sleep and while certain areas or parts of the…

I probably only got about two hours of sleep that night, and they were in small increments of about twenty minutes each. Meanwhile, David at this point had been sleeping like a baby and didn’t wake until 4:00am, which was the same time I woke up for the last time. We stayed awake until 6:00am and heard the best thing that could have happened. We were stopping at Cracker barrel to eat breakfast. This was so crucial because I had been starving all night long.…

Oswald suggests that sleep is the ideal time for the body to replenish itself in addition the repair of damaged cells. Oswald also believes that during REM sleep the high levels of brain activity could indicate brain recovery and the increased levels of growth hormones during Slow Wave Sleep indicates the recovery of the body. This supports the idea that REM stages of sleep are important in restoring the body to its optimal state. New-born babies exhibit a vast amount of REM sleep. REM Sleep takes up about 60% of total time asleep in new-borns the decreases to about 25% as the child ages.…

Waking up then becomes more difficult, and larger brain waves begin to form. Once stages one and two passes by, the sleeper falls into the next stage known as “deep sleep”. Heavy sleep begins in NREM stage three while slow delta waves take place after thirty-five to forty minutes since the person fell asleep. Electroencephalograms, a system to measure brain activity, show that brain waves slow down more and become significantly larger. The dreamer sleeps through the noise and disruptions without any physical response.…

The biological approach relates to sleep as it’s theories involve bodily processes and functions. The biological approach explores events that occur within the body. Sleep is important as our bodies need sleep to function as certain functions are restored within the body. The biological approach states that sleep occurs in a circadian rhythm known as the sleep-wake cycle occurs over a 24-hour period. The hypothalamus is located in the brain and contains the superchiasmatic nucleus (SCN) which controls the circadian rhythm.…

Sleep is, perhaps, one of the most confounding aspects of humanity, even to this very day. There is a host of theories as to why humans require sleep, as well as a similar variety of theories as to why sleep brings dreams. Some say that they are simulations - a means originally produced by the brain to help humans prepare for particular events they have yet to encounter in reality. Others say it is to de-stress the mind, to unravel the complicated webs of data collected through our senses throughout the day. Regardless of the specifics, I have always been a dreamer, and a vivid one at that.…

When people sleep, their body rests and restores its energy levels. A good night sleep means to help you cope with stress, solve problems, or recover from illness. “Sleep is prompted by natural cycles of activity in the brain and consists of two basic states: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid eye movement sleep, which consists of Stages 1 through 4. During sleep, the body cycles between non-REM and REM sleep. Typically, people begin the sleep cycle with a period of non-REM sleep followed by a very short period of REM sleep.”…

When this department denied my application in the fall, I thought carefully about why I craved becoming a math major. Last time I applied I was becoming a math major because I loved mathematics, but I had no idea what I wanted to do with that love once I graduated. I wrote about the teacher who almost ruined my chances of being a successful student, and how vigorously I fought to get to where I am today. When the email came informing me of my denial, my heart sank. I had expected to be sad but I did not expect to be heartbroken because at that time I really had no idea what I wanted to do.…

Math wasn't always difficult, in the past I honestly think I was better at math or maybe math was just easier back then. In elementary school I remember that in award ceremony's I would be rewarded 3 math medals and only received 1 language arts medal. Now as for middle school, math did start to get a bit more challenging. If there was ever a problem that I struggled on I would just ask my friends or the teacher for help. In the past when there was a difficult problem I would just work on my own to figure out the solution, and if I couldn't find it I'd just ask for help.…

Recent studies that sleep’s function goes far beyond rest and replenishment. It also involves a state of active offline information processing that is essential to the appropriate functioning of learning and memory. It has been established that there are three important stages in memory; new memories are initially acquired (encoding), become strengthened and reorganized (consolidation), and are finally recalled (retrieval) (Feld and Diekelmann, 2015). Memory is often divided into two categories, declarative and non-declarative. Declarative memory is known to be those memories that are available to conscious recall.…
