Reflection Paper On Public Speaking

Decent Essays
My expectations for this class were for one, to improve my public speaking skills and two, to get over my fear of public speaking. Getting over my fear of public speaking has really taken me a lot of time. I feel that I can speak better in front of a group of customers at work than I can in front of a classroom. Throughout this class and all of my speeches, I feel that I have improved a bit. More or so, I feel that I began to get comfortable with those around which made me feel less nervous. I was also fairly proud that I could prepare for a speech in less time than I would have had in a regular 18-week semester. My story telling speech was the very first speech that I delivered. It was the first speech assigned and I was only given 24-hours …show more content…
When it came to choosing my topic, I actually had two things in mind. One was my final topic which was the Ultra Music Festival and the second was La Tomatina, which was a huge tomatoes food fight in Spain. After having looked up both events, the food fight interested me more but there was not much history to the event itself so I was not sure if I was going to have a lot to say. There was more history to the Ultra Music Festival than I had imagined but it was an event that interested me and gave me a good amount of information to talk about. My level of being nervous was a bit high for this speech because there was a lot of information I did not know that I had to memorize and I was afraid I would stand in front of the class and forget it all. But just like my other speeches I did feel a lot better in the end. At this point in the class, I felt that I was beginning to improve a bit even though me being nervous did not seem to change. My second to last speech was my critic speech. For this, I did not feel nervous at all. To my surprise, that made me happy. It took me a while to decide whether I wanted to do a movie or a restaurant but I feel that I like a lot of movies and don’t focus on the bad effects, which led me to choose a restaurant. For that, I had chosen the last restaurant which I had gone too. I felt pretty good when I was presenting as well as when my speech was

Public speaking can be very hard for some people, and it can make a huge first impression. In the book An Essential Guide to Public Speaking by Quentin Schultze it goes deeper than just talking to a regular audience. It talks about being a Christian and handling public speaking. This is a great book to learn about how to be a public speaker and a Christian but not to lose your audience by talking too much about God or not enough. When someone says a free society in public speaking it opens, it appeals to a lot more people.…

Once I’m able to do this, I think that skill will carry over past the class and help me in my specific career path which is one of the most important things about the class to me. Another idea that the book mentioned that I think could be good for me is using movement to minimize anxiety. “You don’t have to stand perfectly still behind the podium when you deliver a speech. Walk around as you make some of your points. Movement relieves tension and helps hold the audience’s attention.”…

    1. I believe there were some positive aspects of my speech. Firstly, I was not a nervous when speaking in front of the audience. This allowed me to have the speech flow smoother than last time. I was not expecting the audience to be as large as it was this time; but I think the increase of people might have helped easy some of my anxiety.…

I was really confident and prepared when I started to give my speech. I know that if you go first you do not have many examples, but I like to see what other people did, and I also would have liked a few more examples to go off of. I was about seventh on the list on the Tuesday that I presented. To be honest, I did not think that I would have had to go. There were three people sick, and there were two people not ready so that made me second.…

Overall, I received fair feedback. Although I was able to hit most of the skills from each category there were a few that I missed from each. During the actual practice I was very focused on not messing up and hitting the key points. However, once I was finished and recapping over the session I realized both strengths I have developed and challenges I still need to work on. This experience showed me what I have have learned thus far in class and also what I still have to learn.…

However, I personally felt nervous as I was talking. This was reinforced by feedback I received which said “you seemed slightly nervous at first but then as confidence grew the teaching became increasingly better.” I felt this was due to a lack of preparation and could have easily been resolved by practice and repetition. Also, next time I will prepare some notes to prompt me and to ensure I do not forget to mention any important details the students may…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…

Throughout the year, as a class we have been given many different challenges in either the form of an essay, speech, or group presentation. The final assignment given to us was a group project presentation. From growing up in an age filled with technology, I have come to love projects that revolve around making some form of a PowerPoint presentation. This PowerPoint though, was both difficult and interesting for the reasons of being assigned group members not of my own choosing, learning to listen to others ideas which can help me to learn something new, and using former knowledge while working together to create a clean, in depth, and well prepared presentation. With working in groups of students whom I have known since I was young but…

I sometimes get nervous about what people are thinking about my speech when I am giving it but if I don’t judge people from the audience then I will have the mindset when I am on stage that people from the audience are not judging me. Lastly, I think that I will be able to get up in front of people and give a speech without getting extremely nervous. I haven’t had much experience with speaking in front of big groups but hopefully by the end of this semester I will be very good at it without having any nervous feelings if someone asked me to give a public…
