My Excitement: Moving From Washington To California

Personal Statement

Excitement has always been what filled me as I discovered my family would be relocating, along with some worry of the outcome. At a young age we moved from Washington to California. We moved one other time in the span of 8 years in California. While in California I watched as my mother pursued other people whether she was working in ministry, running Bible studies, or teaching students. At the same time my dad was involved in the business world. After my 6th grade year my parents direction in life turned back to the Chelan Valley; returning to the family orchard and business so my dad could take over the work his parents had begun. This connected us with our family roots. Something I value immensely.

That’s right, I said it! If you read the title, then you would know that I, Liberty Rockhold, just called Illinois the worst state ever! Now I could start listing the reasons why, no capital punishment, taxes, and Chicago are only a few, but I’ll save you the time. Instead, I’m just going to talk about the first part of the title, the move. Me ranting over why Illinois is a horrible state, or me telling the story of when I moved to this horrid state.…

A universal theme for me moving from Texas to California is overcoming. I was 8 years old when my family moved, and had to overcome knowing no one, a new school, and being out of my comfort zone. At this age you tend to start making good friends, all hang out in groups, and be less adventurous. My parents kept saying, “Find people who like the same things as you, and everything else will be easy”. The next week I did just that.…

However, eventually I had to leave the breathtaking country where the people decorated in gorgeous colors surrounded me. I had to return to the United States to continue my education and go to University. Not being with my parents was a challenge I knew I could face head on; my parents raised me to be very self-sufficient. However, I did not anticipate how arduous it would be when I felt stranded while all my friends went home for Labor Day, birthdays, and long weekends. I was left with…

Things you experience are one of the major factors in who you become. I am 27 years old and have moved 26 times in my life. This has made me extremely resilient to a variety of situations, especially change. I generally welcome chaos and get bored extremely easily with repetition because I am so used to things changing frequently. Most of the places I moved to were similar enough culture wise, but some of the places, like Chattanooga, TN, were very different from what I was used to.…

When people realize they have to leave everything they have known, loved and cared for twelve thousand miles away from them the impact is so great. Some people think it was easy for me to move from Australia to America, but really it is difficult to forget about. When someone moves from one house to another they don’t usually leave the country where their family, friends and memories are. As for me, in 2011 my family and I traveled to the United States to look for a house to live in. My dad was offered a new job but the catch was that we had to move.…
