My Example Of A Social Norm

Decent Essays
Your social norm is something that I would never have thought of. I would probably have been taken back too. To them it was probably like not shaking someone’s hand when you first meet them. I am glad that they finally excepted it and were not as rude about it. Social norms are definitely something I would not be ready for in another country. Hipsters probably do not identify themselves as hipsters and that is what makes them hipsters. I see how subgroups are generalizations, but also could be considered stereotypes. I could also see hipsters not being into the specific media that you mentioned above. I really like you test question. I anticipate questions like that on quiz 1.

Breaking a social norm might seem easy, yet when it’s time to actually break it it’s nerve wracking. On a Wednesday afternoon around 1:30, Jerry and I lunched at Chili’s located in Miami Gardens. Approximately, there were about 12-15 observers not including the waiters. Because the bar area was the most crowded area in the restaurant, I decided to lunch there. Majority of the population were African-American male and female, yet there were a couple of white observers.…

This is due to the fact that mores are essential to the values of different culture. Norm violations occur when a person thinks or behaves in an abnormal way, a way that differs from the expected behaviors within one’s culture. With the advent of social media, “following” occurs conveniently. However, this following may change both personal and social norms. Some followers blindly obey every norm from social media, mainly to keep up with what is popular. As the social media is highly accessible, the strength of the following is reinforced. This phenomenon can be described with a new word, “Normolemmingism,” analogous to lemmings blindly follow others in everything and ultimately commit to suicide just because others do that.…

As I was violating this social norm, I felt strange and out of place. I had a lot of awkward encounters that day and i think it was because i normally don't stop and start talking to strangers or greet them by using hand gestures. Normally if someone smiles or says hi, i smile back or say or hi and then we both go our separate ways. With this experiment, I would have to stop and greet them in an unusual and personal way.…

The everyday social norm that my friends and I were trying to violate simply had to do with the way that people act in a general retail store. Putting a little twist into just taking things from peoples carts, we instead would be walking by a person with a cart and purposely trip over their cart and dramatically fall to the ground. Also we would run into isles of pretty much anything that couldn’t break open. Generally just making a scene, something that you wouldn’t see on an every day basis. I had a few of my friends do this with me for a couple reasons.…

What is this doing to the children in our society? What implications does this have? It may seem like a little thing, but I think the implications behind this are quite large. When we tell a little girl to stay inside and play with her Barbies, or tell a little boy that it’s not okay to play with dolls, we’re telling them that it’s not okay to explore other options, that it’s not okay to express themselves in the way that they’re wanting to. We’re telling them that society has expectations of them, that we have expectations of them, even at their very young and impressionable age.…

A social norm is someone’s behavior that differs from the usual expectations, this can result a variety of emotions such as awkwardness to the people victimized. I have experienced it myself, an example can be, violating a norm by grabbing someone’s hand randomly while walking in a public area. Normally a person walks by themselves, but the action of me grabbing an anonymous person's hand, made the situation very awkward and uncomfortable. Before engaging to my norm, I predict this is going to be very embarrassing.…

According to Merriam-Webster online, a rule is defined as, “a usually written order or direction made by a court regulating court practice or the action or parties, or a legal precept or doctrine.” Rules are a necessity for civilized society because without them everything would turn to chaos. Without rules and guidelines set by the government, people could do whatever they want whenever they want without any consequences. In Lord of The Flies, proper rules and punishments weren’t applied and everything slowly escalated to chaos. There would probably be mass murder, rape, theft, and much more happening at a much higher rate.…

I went to the Wintergreen Ski Resort up in Nelson County to try out skiing for a day. Some individuals violated the social norms, while others didn’t violate them at all.…
