My Ex-Husband Essay

The poem “My ex-husband” is written by Gabriel Spera, who was born in Staten Island, and raised in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. Spera also earned a BA in English from Cornell University, as well as a MFA in poetry from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. “My ex-husband” is about an ex-wife talking about her now, ex-husband and their divorce, which was caused by an affair to her suggested new lover. This poem happens to be a re-vision of the original poem “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning. When looking over the criteria for poem criticism, Spera’s poem does not fully fit the criteria of being discussed in an English 102 class. While it displays some of the aspects of a poem, it simply does not have enough substance to carry a full intellectual discussion in an English class. The poems that were chosen for this particular English class have a little more depth to them, and is a little more structured. The poems that were used discussed three major themes such as life, death, and justice. The poem “My ex-husband” does display the theme of justice however, it would not fit nor compliment any of the poems that were chosen.
