My Ethnography Report

Improved Essays
My parents only took pictures of me until I was eight years old. At that point, they gave me my first camera and bridled me with the job of “family photographer.” From then on, I was always behind the camera, which is why there are few pictures of me from eight to sixteen. Despite these unfortunate gaps in our scrapbooks, this early introduction to photography combined with my growing up in several multicultural communities across the world has helped me become the digital storyteller that I am today.

I’ve moved five times in my life, each move to a different country. These moves often took place during crucial periods of my development, and having to adapt to different cultures, languages and education systems has made me flexible and resourceful.

Luxembourg coming in at a whopping 999 square miles is a true David among Goliaths. The triangle-shaped country is surrounded on all sides, like a well set ambush, by Germany to the east, France to the south, and Belgium to the west. With a temperate climate and a rather low population density it is the perfect place to get away from the fast paced life many of us share here in the states. The southern portion of the country is known as the “the Good Land” or in words of the surrounding populace Bon Pays or Gutland in French and German, contains one of Europe’s major iron ore deposits. This natural resource is the main source of the country’s wealth.…

“Improving Elementary American Indian Students' Math Achievement with Inquiry-Based Mathematics and Games” describes a 2008-2009 ethnographic case study of four fifth grade classrooms with varying levels of Native American student enrollment (Stone & Hamann, 2012). Dr. McMillan (2016) refers to ethnography as “the quintessential qualitative approach” (p.312). Stone contends that it remains necessary to “account for what was actually happening with American Indian and other children in these classrooms” prior to asking questions regarding the efficacy of programs (Stone & Hamann, 2012, p. 53). Toward this end, Stone employed observations, interviews, and participant observations.…

On September 11, 2011, a new memorial, honoring those who perished in the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon ten years prior, officially opened to the public. One feature that makes this memorial so unique is that the structures erected to remember those victims are actually located in the foundation that the Twin Towers originally stood. Since then, the memorial, located in downtown Manhattan, has hosted thousands of guests, all who have come to witness and visit the space that has animated 21st century American history, politics, and identity. Here, this site will serve as the field to which I will be conducting my ethnographic research this semester. The subject of my research will focus on the question of how do society…

Over the last decades, the achievement gap between white and black students has grown significantly due to a plethora of reasons such as race, income, and lack of a quality education. The purpose of my auto-ethnography is to explore how race and inequality played a role in my high school and has contributed to the ever growing epidemic of blacks having access to a quality and equal education. In order, to execute my purpose, I want to illustrate how living in a low income, crime infested community, and predominately black community has contributed to high school dropouts, underqualified teachers, and low test scores. Including real personal examples of how obtaining an education in my community has not only aided and abetting the advancement of whites not only for me, but rest of my fellow counterparts. I will be linking my high school experiences to different epidemics that surround education and the…

For my mini-ethnography, I decided to choose Harold A Henry Park, a park that is in the middle of Windsor Village and has been apart of that community for a while now. I picked this park because it has a great deal of meaning to me and is my neighborhood park. I grew up only a block away from this lovely park which is in the middle of a residential area. I use to walk to the park almost everyday and play soccer or in the jungle gym with all the other little kids who lived in the area, this park was where I spent most of my childhood. Since this park is located in the middle of a residential area, it can be expected that it isn’t as big as other parks such as Pan Pacific or West Hollywood Park.…

Throughout the past six years of my life, I had always kept an interest in photography and capturing memories through the eye of a camera lens. My interests began with my first iPhone and then continued on with my Canon Rebel T1i. Throughout these years, I would take pictures of a variety of different things – people, nature, and landscapes. Modern photography has allowed for us, as humans, to become more involved in our surroundings and delve into art, color, and detail, all while enhancing our memory and appreciativeness of the world around us instead of hindering it; however, we must learn to not live through the eye of a camera lens.…
