Essay On My English Reflection

Before I started this course, my writing was not necessarily bad. I did struggle with a lot, but I was never a horrible writer. I would frequently drift into second person while I was in first person. That was my main struggle. I figured that was normal though. Everyone was doing it, so I figured that it was the way to go. It was not until I was properly taught in this course to make sure that the point of view that I am writing in, in the moment, is consistent. Now I don’t have a problem with consistent point of views. In high school, I struggled a lot with comprehension. When I read something, I couldn’t write about what I read. My excuse was the reading was not sticking to the brain. I realized that the problem was not the reading wasn’t …show more content…
Then I received credit for each assignment after that. I have learned so much in this course, especially how to organize my papers. I would always brainstorm before I type my papers, and I use to get exceptional grades for them in High school. It was not until I was in this course where I took my organization skills to the next level. I was writing the ‘My English’ Essay, and It was a satisfactory paper, I could see myself receiving a low A, or a high B on the assignment. Mrs. Coleman informed me that it was an amazing paper, it’s just missing something in the introduction paragraph. My paper was on how my english varies to whom I’m speaking with at the moment. I started speaking about gumbo in the first two sentences saying that my english is like gumbo. Ms. Coleman said,”...it is a great way to start off your paragraph, but it’s too great to be only a few sentences.” So she told me to speak about gumbo for the entire introduction, then transition into how my english is like gumbo as well. It was perfect, I fell in love with Mrs. Coleman as a professor. I never had a teacher that took what I had and bring it to another

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

Coming into English 101, I really did not know what to expect. This was my first college writing class so I had no idea what it was going to be like. In high school I would have considered myself to be a decent writer, not the best or not the worst. I would never impress anyone with my writing skills but I could still come across as educated on my topic.…

Reflecting on your previous writing can bring to light how your writing skills have improved and grown into your current writing. Previously, I had been exposed to a lot of writing and reading in my AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature classes in high school. The writing skills that I had learned in both classes dealt with analysis papers pertaining to a specific prompt or style. I also had been exposed to lots of literature, specifically short novels and poetry that I had to interpret. My high school AP English classes prepped me for the college level writing class at High Point University.…

This course has helped me figure a lot of my strengths as a writer. I learned that I have good ideas and can be a good writer when a topic interest me. I have also learned that my grades usually reflect on how well I followed the criteria of an assignment. I realize that I have unique points of views on certain topics and often like to give my own thoughts and explanations about a topic. I also know how to be straight to the point with whatever message I try to convey.…

I have learned how to use neutral language, write complete thesis statements, how to put my own tone and voice in my writing, and how to critique my own paper. How to use neutral language was the most difficult skill to learn over the semester. “Standardized tests can be viewed by teachers, students, and parents, as helpful for the school system or detrimental to one’s academic future”. This opening sentence from my Informational Argumentative Essay is a perfect illustration of how my neutral language showed both sides of the argument but did not actually take a side. “Spiro Theodore Agnew used logos, pathos, and ethos to successfully get his point across to the millions of Americans listening to him that the news is giving out twisted information”.…

Jamie – 582 WORDS Composition has changed my thinking in more ways than one. Writing is no longer a burden, but an opportunity to expand my thinking. Although I am not great at writing and I have more to learn, I now enjoy exploring ideas and putting pen to paper. I have been challenged almost to the brink of insanity and pushed to the edge but I have grown not only in my studies, but as a writer. My writing process in the beginning of this course was total chaos.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

One of the most important lessons was that I needed to stay on top of my work otherwise it would take a while to catch up. In college, classes and papers will fly by faster than in this class, so I feel lucky to have the opportunity to feel the college paper writing experience. I also this this class taught me to work hard and never give anything less than 100 percent. I feel this way because with every paper I had to prove my skills and writing techniques in order to get a good grade. Taking this class has helped me improve my skills and techniques as a writer, and I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead in Composition…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…
