Reflective Essay: My Second Time In English 1157

Improved Essays
As you know, this is my second time taking English 1157. The first time, it was a complete failure. I did not learn anything and it felt like a waste of time. I was very discouraged when I was told I would have to retake a class. I went into this semester worried. I did not want to fail again but most importantly, I wanted to learn something. Taking the class for a second time, I have learned so many things and now know that English is not something that I have to dread. Thank you, Ms. Hemm! For the first project we wrote personal essays. These projects helped me learn a lot about myself personally and professionally. Personally I learned that, though I do not wear makeup, I now know it is not something I need. Professionally, I was upset …show more content…
We had to interview someone and then go on to write about them, focusing on one topic. After writing multiple interview questions and actually asking the questions I had come up with, I learned that it is better to start off with general questions and see what happens. I was asking questions as I had created them without focusing on what could be useful leading information that came from their answers. I then decided to do a follow up interview as my revision of the profile project. Before I began my follow up interview, I went over what answers I received previously and looked to see where useful information could be found. I inserted follow up questions in places they could be used. During the second interview, I found myself not focusing on a script but it felt more like a conversation about someone’s life. From working on this project I learned that writing does not have to go by a script, you can go on your own path and not only what is given to …show more content…
I avoided a book at all cost because that it is what I had done the previous time I wrote and review and it was embarrassing. I chose something familiar to me, something I enjoyed and something that people could relate to. I chose the steak house, Texas Roadhouse. I then began making lists after lists describing pros and cons, places it compared to and gathering useful quotes and sources. After I had my ideas put into the messiest form of writing possible, I continued to make more lists. This time I focused on organization and where my information would be best used. My next step was the scariest part, putting together my information and forming an essay. Though I did have 3 drafts before I finally reached a product I was satisfied with, it actually was not as bad as I had perceived. The review essay came to me much easier than expected. I used knowledge I had learned earlier in the semester through the other projects: it does not have to be scripted, I can always start over, I understand how to use citations, and grammar is not that scary and just go with the

It was challenging because you must find the right questions, tone of voice and eye contact. The order of the questions is very important because the next question can piggyback off the first one. The quoting directly is also different because what if you are not quoting right. When it comes to Composition 1, I learned a lot. In the beginning I wanted to learn how to become a better and creative writer. Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

I was able to create my first storyboard and treatment, which was really fun for me. I was also challenged to work with a partner and brainstorm our ideas and be able to agree on a concept. I learned how to use some of the basic equipment for this project and I got to try out some more advanced editing techniques, which I really gained a lot from. What I really value about this project though, is that I was able to bring a simple idea in my head, work it onto paper and a shot list, and then eventually bring it to life. It truly is an incredible feeling to see something from your head come to life and be something other than just a thought.…

Mock Interview Reflection The mock interview was closely related to the topics covered in the readings and in class. Getting practice using the techniques we have been learning in real time, with a real person, made the content more concrete. I was conscious of employing solution focused techniques as much as possible in the short time we had to conduct the interview. While my performance produced mixed results, the practice was a good start to becoming an expert using the technique. Strengths and Effectiveness When reflecting on my performance, I was able to express to the client I was fully engaged in our conversation by intentionally implementing a variety of reflection strategies.…
