My English Co-Taught Classroom

Within my English co-taught classroom, I differentiate through 5 different ways. One differentiation I do is placed the students based on reading levels. I have done Fountas and Pinnell running records in order to place my students in groups. This is important because during stations groups the students are placed with their groups (What is Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) and how is BAS used?). A second differentiation, I do is the way I co-teach with my co-teacher. When you introduce a new lesson, we teach the concept through team teaching under a tier 1 (whole group environment). Yet when we teaching content on a regular day we parallel teach (small group instruction. It is very important that I keep a great communication with my co-teach about the lessons and how they can be reach to students in a smaller setting. Just as references in Chu, S., & Flores article, have a great communication with the co-teacher whether its ENL or special education will allow to plan successful activities and misconceptions students may have. In the article by Lorrie Santamaria, CRT seeks to empower students educationally and to expand their capabilities in other spheres including social, emotional, and political arenas by making students’ own skills, languages, and attitudes meaningful in the classroom. I try my best to connect the lessons with things that are reliable to things they see at home or find of great importance. For example, when I did a regrouping lesson, I mention the connection of them trading chips with each other during lunch time.     I support them with their Literacy and Numeracy and day to day needs. Two of my children have a statement and the other children are either EAL or just need support in learning.
