My Elizabethtown Experience

Elizabethtown is known to educate for service, which means using gained knowledge for the betterment of society. I will have the tools and opportunities to create a better community through educational courses and this is one major characteristic I considered when looking for colleges. Etown stood out to me in particular because we share the same values. I have gone on five mission trips, two of which were to Guatemala. On these trips, I learned a lot about myself and other cultures, but most importantly, I learned how gratifying it is to help others. It was called an event “so bizarre that historians would have to reach back in Biblical times to find a calamity big enough for comparison” (109) and “quite possibly the most important single event in the history of religions” (104). Religious historian and author J. Z. Smith’s essay is a shocking and eye opening expose into the life of James Jones and the congregants of the Peoples Temple, all of whom committed mass suicide on November 18,1978 in Jonestown, Guyana. Smith uses this essay as an educational and informational piece explaining what he thinks happened and why, while also chastising his fellow religious scholars for focusing on long passed religious matters instead of participating in public conversations about the current state of Jonestown. Smith is correct in asserting that, “if the events of Jonestown are a behavioral skandalon to the Enlightenment faith, then the refusal of the academy to interpret Jonestown is, at least, an equivalent skandalon to the same faith” (111). Smith’s frustration is almost palpable in this essay, while he is desperately trying to explain what our responsibilities as scholars are.…

As the daughter of parents who love to travel, I’ve had the pleasure of travelling across Canada and America as well as a few other countries from a young age. I have visited the loud and bustling streets of Tokyo and the ethereal gardens in Kyoto, stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon, walked the strip in Las Vegas, and watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean in Martha’s Vineyard. When I flip through old family photo albums, I don’t recall much more than what is shown in their pages. The outdated clothing, the people, and the locations are seen in the images, and therefore…
