The school that I decided to do my EL service paper on is San Juan Unified School District which served in Arden-Arcade, Carmichael, Orangevale, Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, parts of Rancho Cordova, and parts of Sacramento. In their district they value diversity and it is a valuable asset that strengthens and enriches their community. EL students belong to their community and it is their mission to educate and inspire EL students to succeed. EL students are placed into their neighborhood schools. However, the EL student’s parents have the right to request open enrollment to their choice of school. One assessment that the district used is the Home Language Survey (HLS). This assessment is more a survey for the parent or legal guardian to complete. This information will help the school to provide appropriate instruction to the student. The HLS will remain on file in the student’s …show more content…
The district has more than one type of programs for the students and parents to choose from. The strategies that they are using is based on SDAIE strategies which was one of the strategies that we talked in class that can be used to teach EL. The district seems to care about their students and want to provide as much as help to their students. In addition, they want to build trusting relationships with the parents. Parents of EL get opportunities to be involve with their children’s education by working with the district staff. In addition, they get to evaluate the instructional services and provide recommendations to the district. The district wants parents to be involve, so the district made policies and procedures for the ELAC at school-site level and district level. After reading San Juan English Learner master plan, it seems that there is no suggestion for specific improvements. It looks like the district know what they are

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. ESE stands for exceptional student education classes.…

This school’s community is a small, rural town with a population of 10,388 reported on the 2010 U.S. Census. In addition, the same census revealed 21.1% of people in Mount Airy were below poverty level. External factors related to poverty such as economic opportunities, access to services, care, programs, facilities, and the student’s social and developmental history including nutrition likely negatively impact a significant portion of this student body. Another external factor to consider is the diversity of students of differing races, ethicities, genders, economic standing, or disabilites that are administered standardized tests that determine if the school has made adequate progress. There is a need for policymakers to reform and enact policies that will benefit students and address the acheivement gaps (“Identifying Stakeholders’ Responsibilities,”…

My ambition to become a dentist and practice in underserved community clinics comes from my experiences living in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. My hometown, Los Fresnos, is between two of the poorest cities in America - Brownsville and Harlingen. Some areas of Los Fresnos have more than 90% of families living below the poverty line with average household incomes below $15,000. Many who live near the poverty line rely on inexpensive or government clinics to receive health care. As a resident of this town, I have been a part of these statistics, as well as my friends, family, and the students I work with.…

According to the United States Census, “In 2016 there were 40.6 million people in poverty” This is a lot of impoverished people living in a country that most people may consider the wealthiest nation on Earth. This is due to the issue of income inequality, and is well illustrated in the book “Dream Hoarders” by Richard V. Reeves. The book discusses income inequality in America, mainly between the upper and lower middle class. It discusses that the Middle class itself is divided on income issues.…

In Kandice Sumner’s Ted Talk, How America's public schools keep kids in poverty, she passionately delivers a message about the “education debt” (Sumner, 2015) that many schools, especially those in poor neighborhoods are suffering from. Through her experience as a both a teacher and a student, she constructs an influential speech that argues that we need to help and change the school system, as to include kids of minority races and give equal opportunities to each and every student. Unlike some kids, I have lived outside of New Mexico, I have experienced different things, gone to different schools, and seen different cultures. I have seen the difference in resources, first-hand, in which some of the schools I have been to had many resources…

It ensures that ELLs are identified, assessed for appropriate educational services, and have equal access to educational resources and programs. According to the textbook “no federal laws exist that mandate a specific type of program to serve the needs of ELLs” (Ariza, 2010, p. 22). That decision is left to the school and an LEP committee to place the student into the best fitting available program at the school. If I was on the LEP…

The article I chose to read is "Race, Poverty, and Community Schools." The article speaks a lot about the importance of the community’s role in public education. Therefore, I think that the author believes the purpose of education in our society is to teach our students to be good citizens, who are helpful in their community. I think the author wants our public schools to implement the tools in our students to help our community become a better place.…

The first SEI strategy that I noticed that the teacher implemented into her lesson was vocabulary and language development. She first started by going over the ABC’s with her students. According to the U.S Department of Education, more than 40% of American low-income schools do not receive a fair share of state and local funds. Regardless of the government issued “No child Left Behind” program, the department found that schools in poverty struck regions are left shortchanged and are provided with less resources for a necessary education than the affluent communities. A strong majority of these poverty stricken schools reside in minority communities like African American or Latinos. Unfortunately, since these schools are not being equally funded to their neighboring wealthy school districts, minority students will not have equal opportunities to educate themselves to their fullest potential. According to the Huffington post, as of 2010, minority students drop out rates were disproportionately higher than their White counterparts.…

One of the most important issues for parents is their child’s education. The quality of education that a child receives is based largely on where they attend school. This essay will explain the history of school choice, give an examination of the options available to students’ selection of schools, and whether or not public funding of school choice should continue to be made available to students.
