My Educational Goals

I believe that each person has something to give to the world. Each child has potential to be something great, no matter the challenges they face. As someone who has family members who have high incidence disabilities, I also see the need for these students to feel loved, valued, and a part of a regular classroom environment on a daily basis. This is my goal as I move into teaching elementary school, hopefully on a 2nd grade level or above. Students with high incidence disabilities are just like typical children. They need to feel like they are similar to their peers and can be included in daily activities. The first step I will take in my classroom to make this possible is to start the year off with a class discussion on compassion and treating others with respect. This discussion will also include time for the students to reflect on how they would feel in certain situations. As a class, we will then make a set of class rules to help us be the best class we can be. As the school year progresses, I want to incorporate team building activities and literature that will help students gain more compassion and think about the feelings of other children and adults. Even though this is not expressly written into state standards, I believe that learning social skills is a vital …show more content…
Even if certain strategies do not work for me, personally, they might be vital keys in a child 's educational success. Being aware of child development is also a crucial part to my plan of action. I want to be able to notice when a problem might occur more frequently than just seeing it after the failure is already occurring. In order to do this, I will need to use a lot of manipulatives, hand on activities, and rely more on authentic activities and assessment for a true understanding of each of my students. This will take a lot of time and effort, but each child is worth

When observing a special education classroom I am not only observing the class, but I am observing a glimpse into my future as a teacher. I was privileged enough to observe a multi-needs intermediate classroom with students who range from eight to ten year olds at Hope D. Wall School who have moderate to server learning disorders and physical handicaps. The purpose of the multi-need classroom is for the teacher to assess which path the student will take after the year is over. For an example some students might need more intensive guidance during their education, while other students attend life skills classes in order to prepare for life outside of school. While I was observing the class, I was fortunate enough to witness the students participate…

My post-secondary educational goals is to graduate from college with a master’s or doctorate's degree in Native American, Ethnic, or American studies. I have yet to decided what career I would like to pursue. However, I know that whatever it may be, I imagine myself working to help the Native people and will pursue that in whatever form that may be in. I believe I have a role as a Native American to attended and graduate college and apply that degree to improving life on the reservation for Native students and Native citizens. Despite roadblocks and situations where all odds could be against me, I proceed to carry on because I’m driven by my own interests and ambitions to keep pursing a better education for myself.…

For the disability ministry project, we were asked to choose a practicum experience where we shadowed or spoke to someone helping someone with a disability. For my project I chose to spend some time in the class for disabled children at the high school I graduated from. Throughout the glimpse of time that was allotted for this particular practicum experience I learned a lot of exciting things about disabilities, but also made some disconcerting revelations. While spending the day at school I was able to interact with the students, teachers, and overall staff of the high school; gaining insights, perspectives, and forming thoughts on everything I had witnessed. From start to finish, my day back at school has left a lasting impression on me.…

According to the research students with disabilities are more likely to have behavior struggles. (Scott, Anderson, & Alter, 2012) Even though students are prevalent to misbehavior does not give the students clearance to misbehave. It allows me to structure my classroom so there are fewer opportunities for the students to misbehave. I maintain high standards for my students with disabilities by encouraging them to accomplish more than he/she has accomplished before.…

Classrooms in our society today are becoming increasingly diverse. This is true not only in terms of the cultures the students come from, but also of their ability level. Inclusion laws, such as the IDEA act of 2004, have set mandates on public school systems to integrate into their classrooms all children with disabilities. Teachers need to be prepared to work with children who come from all walks of life, and who have varying levels of abilities in their learning skills. Teachers also need to foster an environment in which all children, including those with disabilities, feel welcome and wanted.…

The next article I reviewed by Nowicki & Brown examined thirty six children between ages 9 and 12. Twenty boys and sixteen girls with a mean age of 10.42 years in 5th and 6th grade volunteered to take part in the study. The school district that the study took place in had a full inclusion policy with a mandate for all children within the school district to have the right to attend regular classrooms regardless of the presence or absence of disabilities. All the student participants had classmates with disabilities, with three to six children on individualized education plans (IEPs) for cognitive, physical or behavioral exceptionalities in each class. The students were invited to share their ideas on how to socially include classmates with…

After taking this Questa class I have learn many things about teaching and learning. Through Paulo’s letters I have learned that in order to teach, one has to continue to learn as well. That no teacher knows everything and that as a teacher I should be humble towards my students. I should not judge my students because of what I heard from other teachers and students. Instead, I should get to know the students myself and see what their compatibilities are.…

“Retard- delay or hold back in terms of progress, development, or accomplishment.” This word is used way to often to describe a person who is not mentally or physically handicapped. I used to tell people “you’re a retard” or “you’re retarded” when I was younger and didn’t understand what this word meant. The older I got the more brutal and hurtful I realised this word was. I have a good friend whose brother has assburger’s syndrome, his name is JD. When I met JD I realised that he was just like other kids except he learned a lot slower, but he was still extremely intelligent.…

Throughout many years of history, those with disabilities were not always treated fairly or given equal opportunity. Activists around the world have worked together to achieve goals such as increased access to all types of transportation and a safer day to day environment. Equal opportunities in employment and education have been a big part of their efforts too. For many years, children with disabilities were many times segregated and not given an equal opportunity for a chance to learn and succeed in school. A disability should not limit a person’s choice to improve themselves and their intellectual capabilities.…

Everyone should be reminded of what students are involved in and attending. Every chartered club holds conferences or get-togethers of some sort. If students are excited to go on trips to be involved with clubs and organizations and teachers are attending workshops to hear about the most recent goings-on in their field, a sense of involvement, inclusion, and pride is established. Communications must be encouraged to allow everyone to share in the good news of their…
