Part I: Describe a “key moment” in your educational experience as a student that impacted you significantly in your life.

An incident that impacted me significantly occurred when I was in the fifth grade. I was always a high achiever and an “A” student. The school I attended only had one music teacher who taught every grade. Since I had always received an “A” in music class I assumed I had a reasonable singing voice. One day (after having been in her music class for almost five years) the music teacher made fun of my singing voice in front of the entire class. I was devastated. The result was that I did not sing again for many years. Even when I was required to sing with a group I only moved my lips and pretended to sing. This incident destroyed my confidence and affected everything I did. I second guessed myself on everything and was never sure of myself. This made me think that my grades in my other classes were not based on my intelligence, but on my completion of the work. My love of school disappeared. This small incident still hurts even today. The events which happen to us as children can have lasting impact throughout our lives. I doubt that music teacher gave this incident a second thought, but I have relived it a million times. I have seen the decline of ethical and moral behavior over the last fifty years and I believe proper behavior should be modeled in our public schools. In some instances the teacher may be the only mature, ethical, moral adult a student comes into contact with. Examples of ethics in the classroom for students are turning in an assignment which you have completed by yourself, not cheating on tests or quizzes, as well as regular attendance and
