My earliest memory of science is from 5th grade in Mr. Kern’s class. I remember we had a unit on sea creatures, and we got to take care of and study fish and crawfish. I loved this activity because it was so hands on and we were the caretakers of the creatures, so we did all the work. It was really our own experiment, not just something out of a book. We all loved coming into class in the morning and running to see our new pets, and one day I noticed my crawfish had lost its shell. We learned about molting by watching it happen and seeing the changes the creatures went through, rather than reading about it or just seeing pictures. This science unit is the one I always think about when I imagine myself teaching science in an elementary school one day. Middle school took a step up with science, to explore deeper into the things around us. We did this both metaphorically and literally, when we cut open rocks and animals to see what was hidden deep inside. My first experience with a dissection was certainly a memorable one. My science teacher, Ms. Kroc, wore her frog socks and jewelry for frog …show more content…
It was because they loved what they taught so much that I was able to look past the stinky smells and boring lectures on rocks and have fun learning about science in the world. I remember Mrs. Kroc the most from middle school because she made a simple dissection lab into a fun day to look forward to. All of the activities I did in these science classes were ones that were hands on and something that I felt like I was doing on my own. Science is done by experimentation. You can read all you want in a book about chemical reactions, but you don’t get the same feeling as when you actually change the color of fire by adding chemicals to it yourself.
