College Essay About Softball

Playing sports has always been my passion, I love everything about it. But one thing has always stood in my way; my size. I’ve never been the tallest person in a crowd and most of the time I am one of the shortest people in the room. I never imagined that this could hold me back from something that I love so much and could possibly make my dreams of playing collegiate softball unreachable.

I first began playing softball at only five years old. I began playing locally but soon enough moved onto a higher level of play. By the age of thirteen I was playing for one of the biggest organizations in the country and playing with girls almost two years older than me, which also meant playing with girls much much bigger than me. One thing that I have heard all of my life from everybody is that I’m “too short” or I’m “too small”. I always knew that I was smaller than everybody else but it never bothered me, I just thought

Although sports come very easy and naturally to me, not everyone cares about that. My summer is surrounded by softball, it’s mainly all I do. I have played in front of many division one college softball coaches and the first thing they notice is my size, not how far I hit the ball or how fast I run or how I can field a ground ball. They all see that I am a 5’2 third baseman. Because of my height I am at a “disadvantage”, I have to work hard for what I have. I do not have as much power hitting the ball as many of the girls I play with do. I also am not blessed with long arms and legs to give me more arm strength and make my throws harder. In order for me to be able to live out my dream of playing college softball I have to prove that I am more than just a 5’2 third basemen, I have to find a way to stand out. Since most colleges recruit players that are about 5’4 and taller I had to figure out a way to play as if I am 6’0

I have played baseball ever since I was a young kid, but somehow, at seventeen I still had numerous struggles with it. You would think after my grandpa being drafted to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a Major League baseball team, and my dad getting a full ride to the University of Denver their skill would have rubbed off on me, but you would be wrong. I wasn't terrible, I could hit a 90 mile per hour fastball and I could, for the most part, field a ground ball. However, I was definitely not about to be scouted by the college scouts.…

Partway through my first Junior Varsity baseball practice, it was clear that I was the least qualified player on the team. Still learning the basics of baseball, I was pulled aside by the coaches and told that they were still uncertain of their decision and that they would be monitoring my progress to determine eligibility. As soon as I got home, I studied baseball through any video, started attending every practice offered, and constantly requested one-on-one coaching sessions. My coaches slowly took notice of my commitment and my rapidly developing skill set in baseball.…

I play on the women's collegiate softball team at St. Thomas University. I have been playing softball since I could walk and, along with every other athlete, my dream is to play on the biggest and brightest stage possible. For softball that is the NCAA College World Series. Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to make millions of dollars playing professional softball like many other professional athletes. This is it for me because college is the highest level of softball I will play in my life and I don't want to settle at a school where I know my athletic ability and hard work could get me so much further.…

When you look back on pictures of your early childhood, you realize how much enjoyment you had in the past, playing the sport you loved. For me, it was playing softball ever since I was a little girl and watching my sister play ball and longing to be just like her. I remember the long Friday nights that I thought would never end because of practice or the early Saturday mornings waking up at six o’clock to be at the field ready for warm up for another full day of softball. Looking back on those times, I reminisce but do not regret any of those moments. It made me a better person inside and out; it allowed me to develop critical leadership abilities, communication skills, confidence and self-poise that still carry with me today.…

If there weren’t a baseball team for a school due to lack of players, then a male interested would have to play on the softball team. He would most probably lead the league in steals, hits, pretty much everything because of his strength and the fence would be no more than 215 feet so he could easily get a home run (Janelle Greer, 2011). Although Janelle Greer claims men playing in a womens’ softball league would completely dominate, we don’t need her to tell us that. Anyone familiar with how many women are capable of playing with men has long known that just because men are stronger, it doesn’t mean that women shouldn’t get a chance to play with the…

All my life I was always put down for being small. Standing at 4’11 now as a freshman in college I get comments on my height every day. That moment in practice was a significant turning point in my life that proves I am capable of accomplishing anything with hard work and dedication.…
