I would observe my grandmother as she worked with the patients and completed her daily tasks. I fondly remember many of her patients, but Mr. Sullivan will remain the most memorable. Mr. Sullivan was a very kind gentleman, always playing board games and telling me stories about his adventures. He always had a kind word and funny story; never letting his health conditions damper his fun- loving spirit. I admired how my grandmother would do things only to bring a smile to a sick patient’s face for a brief moment to brighten his or her day. I never wanted to read a book as much as I had this one. I could not put it down. It contained a vast amount of information, but the very first health diagnosis I researched was lupus. I wanted to know all that I could about the disease after seeing my grandmother suffer from the condition for numerous years. I felt like I could learn from and handle anything that came my way. I wanted nothing more than to help people, individuals with the same conditions that I was reading about each and every second that I had the chance. I realized that a deep understanding of the material in the book and being able to experience the conditions in the real world would make me a better nurse in my future. Reading the text gave me a new perspective on medical conditions and diagnoses that I would see on a daily basis. It brought a new meaning to the conditions I was recording in charts, as well as assisting with the billing on insurance
