I never dreamed I would become a CRNA because I always thought I would become a computer engineer. I came to America at age 13 in 2003. I was a very studious young child who graduated both middle school and high school with excellent grades. My excellent grades in high school gave me opportunity in choosing between full scholarships between two schools. Unfortunately, I was also an illegal immigrant, and had to decline both offers because I did not possess a green card which would have made me eligible to receive the scholarships. Luckily, I was able to accept other scholarships with smaller awards. Due to multiple scholarship awards and working several student nurse jobs, I was able to pay for majority of my college tuitions without going …show more content…
As a critical care nurse, I enjoy and embrace learning and increasing my knowledge base. I have performed care for patients with a broad spectrum of medical and surgical diagnoses and offered the opportunity to work with complex and clinically challenging critically ill adults. Ranging from managing mechanical ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring, intubating, vasoactive/sedative/paralytic medication infusing titration, Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), Post Cardiac Arrest Hypothermia Protocol, Eko-Sonic Endovascular System, NIH Stroke Scale Certification, TPA infusion, Peritoneal Dialysis, Continuous bladder irrigation, Continuous Electroencephalography (CEEG), Interpreting ABGs and communicating of findings. Working in a fast paced setting helped me to adapt to difficult situations and make decisions quickly with confidence. I feel these skills would translate well with the intensity and demanding nature of this program. I am goal oriented and highly committed to becoming a CRNA. My shadowing experiences have served to further reinforce this desire and have helped me realize how much I still have to learn. This, in turn, has continued to heighten my level of motivation to continue my professional career

For forty-five years, the role of the acute care nurse practitioner has evolved from working in the neonatal intensive care unit to working for people of all ages and across the many specialties of acute healthcare, including the adult-gerontology intensive care unit (Haut & Madden, 2015). The need for nurse practitioners has increased as healthcare has evolved including “pressures from managed health care organizations to reduce inpatient length of stay, increases in patient acuity, and the overall need for cost containment” (Rosenthal & Guerrasio, 2010, pg. 21). Acute care roles as a nurse practitioner include emergency medicine, neurology, and intensive care units (Rosenthal & Guerrasio, 2010). My career goals include continuing the advancements the role of the AGACNP has made over the last forty-five years, and work in the intensive care…

Ever since I started in to the Nursing profession, during nursing school and into my practice, I have always wanted to be a CRNA. I began my nursing career working in the OR and PACU in a critical access hospital. This hospital exclusively employed CRNAs for anesthesia, therefore I got to work closely with them. Each CRNA took the time to explain what and why of doing a task or giving a certain medication. I was fascinated with the anesthesia and machines to create safety and comfort for people during some intense operative procedures.…

For my first independent study as part of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Critical Care Fellowship, I focused on achieving competency with advanced procedural skills. This is consistent with Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner competencies that require AG-ACNPs to perform "specific diagnostic strategies and technical skills to monitor and sustain physiological function and ensure patient safety," (AACN, 2016). Through a multitude of learning opportunities, I believe my technical skills preforming advanced procedures has vastly improved and capacity to manage critically ill patients grown. The technical skills I focused on during the semester were arterial line placement, central venous line insertion, and advanced airway management.…

This highly specialized emergency medicine unit is intriguing to me mainly due to the infinite diversity it brings forth for the health care team in terms of clients’ clinical presentation, diagnoses, and interventions. Not only do clients vary based on contextual factors, but they also range in age, from newborn infants to older adults. All of this ambiguity adds to the complexity of emergency department nursing simply because the body of knowledge, communication skills, and clinical skills required of RNs is very broad and extensive in nature. Emergency medicine practice for an RN includes the accurate triage, comprehensive initial assessments, collaborating and coordinating care with the health care team to diagnose and treat clients, and reassessments based on vital signs and response to interventions, all in an exceptionally fast paced outpatient environment (ACEP, 2015). It also is a valuable window to the status of our current health care delivery system as it visually confirms common issues such as early discharges and high readmission rates, overcrowding, and low access of health care practitioners in the…
