Diversity is a topic that not everyone takes caution for, yet it is a critical aspect in today’s society. In my perspective, diversity is very important because it recognizes people with different backgrounds, skills, experiences, and attitudes as well as conveys new, unaccustomed ideas. In my personal experience, diversity plays a significant role in showing how I’ve developed throughout my life, not only personality-wise, but how my social skills have taken a turn for the better as well. I was raised in a family who always strived to keep me in a culturally and physically diverse environment, specifically where many people had short term assignments working for an international company which allowed me to learn from a copious amount of

In the introduction to his book, The Trouble with Diversity: How We Learned to Love Identity and Ignore Inequality, Walter Benn Michaels introduces his views on why diversity has come to be more appreciated than in times past, as well as his main point and goals for his book. Michaels organizes his introduction with an approach that allows a reader to fully understand his goals for the book, but uses a style of writing that may prevent an audience without extensive knowledge of the subject to fully grasp the meaning of Michaels’ message on diversity. Michaels begins his introduction by discussing The Great Gatsby. In which, a penniless man, Jimmy Gatz, transforms into a rich man that is an epitome of the American values of the 1920’s but is still unable to win…

To me diversity goes far beyond just race, gender, and age. Diversity means there is a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, life experiences, and thoughts/ideas. Diversity means there is an opportunity to grow, learn, and for success. It is an opportunity to grow because you are around people with whom you don't share many similarities, and this means that you will try to get to know them, thus expanding your view of things when you hear how others see things through their eyes. Diversity is an opportunity to learn about other's cultures, what experiences they have had, and hopes/aspirations that they have formed through the lives that they have lived.…

The United States is a country rooted in change. Whether caught up in an international war or embroiled in internal strife, America is in a constant state of flux, rarely settling into peaceful periods and frequently falling into trouble. Economic depressions, natural disasters, civil war, international incidents, and political scandals are only a few of the many trials that the United States have faced as a nation. While all of these obstacles loom large in our heritage, one of the greatest points of contention throughout America’s history has been that of racial diversity, its associated conflicts, and reactions sparked by them.…

I know there is not much diversity in my life, but seeing how little there is on paper was truly eye opening. I have lived in Iowa my entire life and in general, Iowa is not an incredibly diverse state, especially in rural areas. Both of my parents are white and both of my brothers are white. My doctor, dentist, and dental hygienist are white. I grew up in a small town in North Iowa and there were around four people of color in my class of 90.…

The country as we know it may be dividing, a civil war based on race is closer than we think. The numerous protest rallies, routine traffic stops and riots are the end result of cops violently killing innocent blacks, creating a nationwide issue that hasn’t been solved. The police department and numerous others are in a sense targeting suspicious criminal based off skin color, this stereotypical false judgment is resulting in numerous violent altercations instead of peaceful interactions. The media has brainwashed the United States depicting blacks as the “Super Villain” and whites as the “Superhero”, the news is the media to blame for repetitive false judgment. My spectrum of diversity did not reach its full potential until I got to college. Growing up in a predominantly white community, I never experienced anything outside of the familiarity of that community. Although it was never said outright, I knew that white people spent most of their time with mostly other white people and other races followed suit. I have always felt like I was part of a majority group. Almost everywhere I have ever gone in life, there has always been someone with the same and or similar characteristics that I have.…
