My definition of leadership is practice what you preach. It is very easy to read the buzzwords and be a mouthpiece for what you think others want to hear. I feel it is much harder to stand up for those who aren’t in a position to stand up for themselves and put your own well being in jeopardy. My exposure to several different leadership influences throughout my career, both negative and positive has helped shape my philosophy. When I was a Second Class Petty Officer I had the privilege of working for one oft the finest leaders, still to this day, that I have ever seen. My family is the most important thing to me. I realize that in a matter of time, whether it be in 6 years or 16, my career will end and they will be what my legacy is. This has not always been the case, I have not always put them first but it is something I strive to do through my interaction with them and showing them their importance to me. The next two personal values are connected. I value humor and patience almost higher than anything else. More can be solved in our profession with a less humor and the patience than meetings, bolstering and paperwork. The maximum impact we have is on those that work directly for us. Not all of us will achieve a gold badge position or even want one. Learn the job you are in and do it to the best of your ability before you start worrying about the next pay grade. Take care of the people that you work with to the best of your ability. If you see a situation where sparing them a headache means that you endure one…. then endure it. We have all achieved a certain position in this organization by working hard. We need to stop acting like every decision we make will get us fired. Stand by your convictions and be honest, loyal and operate with integrity and everything will work itself out.
