My Definition Of Heroism

My Definition of Heroism Do all heroes wear capes? Heroes do not all wear capes because anyone can be a hero. Heroes come in all different shapes and sizes and are found all over the world. This means that it does not take much to be a hero and have heroic qualities. These heroes vary and there is not just one specific quality that all heroes must have. Heroes can be fearless, confident, faithful, prideful, or courageous. People all over the world, such as enslaved people fighting for their rights in Africa, or hard-working police officers fighting crime in their cities, are all heroes and show leadership in their own ways. Because a hero means to be selfless and faithful, not everyone will be happy and satisfied in the end. Our society …show more content…
People in life pursue their faith by praying to a religion that they believe in. This could cause judgment and in some countries, these people could be punished if they do not believe in what their leaders believe. These people are willing to take this risk for what they believe in and that shows heroic qualities in a person. Women who fight for their rights in society also show heroic qualities. They protest and go on strike for equality because it is what they believe is the right thing to do in order to experience change. They could be judged for this by many people and may lose people's respect but they are willing to take that chance. Near the end of the auto-biography The Life of Frederick Douglass; an American Slave, Frederick Douglass stated, “My soul was set all on fire. Its sympathy for my brethren in bonds-its scathing denunciations of slaveholders- its faithful exposures of slavery…” (Douglass 83). Frederick Douglass felt for his fellow slaves and wanted to stand with them and lead them to fight for equality. These people all fought for what they believed in even though they were taking a big risk and knew that they may not have ended up with a happy …show more content…
People who are there for others and help others with their problems show heroic characteristics. They show they are trustworthy and considerate to others even if they are not getting the same in return. People may not always be there for these heroes but it makes them happy knowing that they helped someone else. These heroes are mostly taken advantage of because of their selfless hearts and are hurt by others. Sometimes, even the person they helped may hurt them. Another example of this is veterans fighting for our country. They go into war, knowing that they may not make it out alive or they may not make it back the way that they first were, but they are willing to take that chance because they want their country and the people in it to be safe and happy. At the end of the poem Oh Captain! My Captain, the narrator states, “From fearful trip, the victor ship comes in with object won” (Whitman 78). Although Abraham Lincoln passed away, he left his heroic legacy behind in fighting for freedom and equal rights. In conclusion, being a hero might not always be the best for the hero itself in the end. Furthermore, heroes are ordinary people who have many heroic qualities and are everywhere. These ordinary people with these heroic qualities do not need a cape to be classified as a hero. Society has leaders and heroes all over the world, stepping up to be a better person for

Based off of stereotypes, heroes are supposed to have ridiculous costumes and good looks, but in reality, heroes are supposed to be people that use the events around them, and their knowledge to complete their tasks. They are usually based off of appearances, and are not always viewed by the traits that make them fit into the title of a hero. These are the type of people that give others hope and save lives each and every day. You do not have to have super powers to save someone, you do not have to be in a position or a career where the main goal is to save someone’s life such as a doctor, a policeman or a firefighter. Heroes can be everyday people, such as a teacher; who teaches kids the everyday essentials of life to grow and be a better person, a parent; who guides and raise their children and protect their children, and even a janitor or trash man; people that help keep the environment clean for our safety and…
