I have opted to enter college “undecided”. I have done so in order to prevent myself from switching majors multiple times once enrolled as so many others have been known to do. Rather, I plan to complete my prerequisite courses during my freshman and into my sophomore year. Then, once I’ve had the opportunity to speak with others in the career trajectories of my interests (anatomy/physiology, anthropology, medical technology), I’ll make a decision on the additional courses I will need to take toward my decided major. Once I have a degree in my desired field, I hope to get a job directly out of college in order to begin paying off the student loans that I accumulate.…

Many sociological causes influenced my decision to attend college and more importantly, Clemson University. Factors such as family, class, gender, culture, race and age all played major and minor roles in why I am here today. Ever since I was a child, Clemson always was in the back of my mind as the college I had wanted to attend due to family ties to the University. Inspired by the fact that America was the one and only place that I would be able to achieve my dreams, I embarked on a journey full of hardships, emotional breakdowns, spiritual findings, and finally coming face to face with who I was and who I wished to become. I remember how little I thought about the changes that would occur in the next few months; rather I was just delighted by the fact that I was finally in the “land of the free”. Elementary school is an enjoyable time for kids. The time where you play tag with your friends, draw on pavement with chalks, try to swing higher and higher until you feel like you’re touching the sky, and a time where most kids get along. When I first made my college decision, I applied to many different types of schools. I had been at the same small middle/high school for six years and was not sure what I wanted in a school. At first, I wanted a big, diverse school where I could become involved in clubs while I advanced further in my academic career. I ended up deciding on a small college named Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences because I was nervous about knowing classmates and making friends in a big school since I had been in a small school for so long. I decided to pursue an advanced Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD.) degree because I had always enjoyed the sciences and thought it would be a good major since I could help people while using science.…

In the rural valley of Panguerstee, nestled in the mountains of Bulgaria, education was not emphasized. From generation to generation, a woman’s success was measured by how many children she bore, and a man achieved manhood only after joining the military. The slow process of modernization in the village helped preserve these alarming beliefs. I was raised by a father who had an 8th grade education, and a mother who struggled to bring-up three girls. Needless to say, my life completely changed when my family won the green card lottery and immigrated to the United States.…
