Mechanical Engineering Personal Statement

Good Essays
My decision to pursue a career in mechanical engineering came, not as an epiphany, but as an evolutionary process. I realized that engineering with a focus on efficient transportation was the heart of my home country’s economy, Thailand. Automobiles became a point of interest for me. I would spend almost every weekend at an automobile repair shop near my home. I would help the mechanics in doing their job, and as my skills developed, I came to understand the role of the engineer - to design intricate and reliable machinery. I wanted to be a part of that creativity. It may seem simplistic, but as a child, I spent much of my free-time creating many projects with my Lego set. It was my favorite toy. Later I began repairing small machinery, often disassembling the pieces to see how it works. When I started working on cars, I realized that I did not want to just fix them, I wanted to create them. My high school counselor guided me toward subjects that would lead me to a career in design engineering. As I continued working on automobiles and attending the classes that were recommended, horizons were opened well beyond my original scope. Trucks, heavy equipment, trains, airplanes, space exploration - they all started with an idea that was drawn on paper. Creativity at its finest. I knew I wanted to be there. …show more content…

From the array of experiences that has shaped the person I am, one index, in particular, will forever be cached in my memory. That memory is the feeling of building my first computer program "Caesar Cipher" in my first computer science class. Before I took my first college class, I built Honda engines and worked on cars. But computer science showed me I could do much more than use a Phillips screwdriver or an impact wrench - it taught me how to become a leader and that, with hard work, I can create something amazing. I am applying to the CSE program at UW Bothell because I want to keep creating amazing software and other applications and reach my goal of becoming a Software Developer.…

I was amazed at the differences in many of the engineering fields as some caught my attention. I would often ask my uncle to help me build items such as toy cars, boats, etc. We would talk for hours about the process and function of the different components. When I started high school, I was very anxious to start exploring the field of engineering. The classes I took to further feed my curiosity and develop my interest were unlike any other classes I had taken before; instead of being taught something and told to memorize it, I was taught how something works and told to apply it to solve a specific problem.…

To me this easily hits home, not solely because I intend to become an engineer but because throughout high school I took a precision machining course through Hutchinson Community College to try to understand the more applied side of mechanical engineering. (I found I did not like it very much) In the Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus class I took my teacher, Miss Umschied told us about how many engineers lacked an applied side to them. For instance they would design a feature on a place it obviously couldn 't go in the real world even though it may have worked on the computer model. Because of that she encouraged me to continue in my machining classes and the robotics program at our high school. Currently I am also taking two Project Lead the Way (PLTW) classes: Engineering Design and Development as well as Civil Engineering and Architecture.…
