I believe that I bring unique set of exposure and experiences with myself as an applicant to the graduate program in Vision Science at University of California, Berkeley. In my case, the decision to partake graduate studies is a result of prolonged introspection about my interests and strengths, timely guidance and advice from mentors, and a natural inclination to pursue challenges and adventures. In the following paragraphs, I will outline some activities and experiences that were instrumental in strengthening my resolve to pursue an academic career in neuroscience. After this age, they become less interactive in class, particularly if there are boys in the class, who usually become much more assertive at this age. While I understood that this was related to the onset of puberty in girls, I also realized that this is a cultural side effect and occurs only India, much more so in small or medium sized cities. The status of education of girls is worse in villages where they are often not even allowed to attend college after school.
In conclusion, my research suggests that in order to have more women in prestigious tech schools like the IITs, special care must be given to female students during grades 7-8 and they must be specifically encouraged to be assertive and communicative in class. Engaging students in open discussions about sexuality and treating both genders equally provides the required impetus to stay interested in science. I am proud to mention one girl trained by our group secured admission at an IIT. The group still runs regular classes though I discontinued teaching there after college.
