Personal Learning Experiences

I believe that I bring unique set of exposure and experiences with myself as an applicant to the graduate program in Vision Science at University of California, Berkeley. In my case, the decision to partake graduate studies is a result of prolonged introspection about my interests and strengths, timely guidance and advice from mentors, and a natural inclination to pursue challenges and adventures. In the following paragraphs, I will outline some activities and experiences that were instrumental in strengthening my resolve to pursue an academic career in neuroscience. I will also write about my interest and activites related to education.

After this age, they become less interactive in class, particularly if there are boys in the class, who usually become much more assertive at this age. While I understood that this was related to the onset of puberty in girls, I also realized that this is a cultural side effect and occurs only India, much more so in small or medium sized cities. The status of education of girls is worse in villages where they are often not even allowed to attend college after school.
In conclusion, my research suggests that in order to have more women in prestigious tech schools like the IITs, special care must be given to female students during grades 7-8 and they must be specifically encouraged to be assertive and communicative in class. Engaging students in open discussions about sexuality and treating both genders equally provides the required impetus to stay interested in science. I am proud to mention one girl trained by our group secured admission at an IIT. The group still runs regular classes though I discontinued teaching there after college.

Lilian Cu Spindler English 1301 3 December 2015 Gender Inequality in STEM Fields Background It is no secret that girls and women are underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematic fields, even in this day and age. Even students agree with each other that girls should be more celebrated in these areas. For example, “In 1968, Caltech male students argued that nerds needed a civilizing female presence.…

Females and males learn very differently from each other and both of their educations can suffer because of the education being taught these days. A single gender environment is essential for the proper education of females. Females won’t be productive learners and will not reach full potential. Females need the proper education because their minds are more complex then males and have a different psychology then males also. Females need an education that caters to their educational needs and a single gender environment…

Women in STEM stands for (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professions always had difficulty in excelling in their chosen career often having to face more challenges so than the male counterparts. Being a woman in the STEM field is quite challenging because they have to deal with the lack of respect, because of their gender they usually have a hard time getting into the stem field. For example if, if a man was to advance in his career, the man is entitled to his new position due to the work he had put forward, but if a women were to advance her career, her hard work would be discounted at the possibility that there been external forces to help her achieve her new position rather than evident her hard work. As well, as woman…

Famed English novelist, Jane Austen once stated “Give a girl an education and introduce her properly into the world” simply put, if a woman is given the proper opportunity in terms of education and enlightenment she will be prepared for what the world has to offer. In recent times fewer women, especially minorities, have been involved in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). This information serves as a chilling contradiction to the late 1960s when technological jobs such as computer programming was deemed as something a savvy young woman could do even comparing computer planning to “planning a dinner”. This paper will analyze why there has been a decrease in the amount of women in the fields of STEM, ways to increase the percentage…

Miss Representation makes the simple claim that females aren't represented enough in positions of power, and when women actually are portrayed in large media formats, it's usually as a sexual object. Young girls are taught to change their physical appearance to please men and act “lady-like”. This can mean learning how to cook and clean, babysit. These young women are often discouraged from being interesting in STEM fields by their mentors in favor of more simple and delicate careers like the arts.…

    Sexist Attitudes

Looking back on high school, it is obvious that there were some strong underlying sexist attitudes in the STEM departments. I was a sophomore in when I had my male chemistry teacher told me that he, “didn’t think I would be able to handle honors molecular biology,” and he proceeded to advise me to take an astronomy class instead, one that wouldn’t be too difficult. I had a 95% in his class and when I went against his judgement, I received an 88% in biology. He underestimated me even though I had the intelligence and the drive to do well in that honors biology class. I wondered why that was until I noticed that I was one of the few girls in that chemistry class.…

Inviting successful alumnae to give first-year female students a talk should also be a potent way to increase gender diversity in Ball State, because successful people can encourage students to explore the field of computer science and give them confidence to study computer science, which can break the conservative thought that girls are not good at learning computer science. According to this idea, Ball State can invite some of alumnae of computer science department, and let them to give freshwomen a talk about their experience and the motivation to choose this major or something can stimulate female students to choose computer science major. That will help to increase gender diversity when some female students listen the stories of those…

The article I have chosen to read was Disappearing Act by Michael Gurian. This article specifically focused on how the male attendance at universities and higher learning institutions has changed dramatically over the years. For example, up until the late 1800’s women were not able to further their education. Perhaps the author wrote this article because he wanted to bring it to the audience’s attention about how the drop in male attendance has been increasing over the past couple years. But in order to get a better understanding we will first discuss issues that can be seen from the early school years, then we will look at what the universities and institutes were like then and finally, we will see what the universities and institutes look…

Truant Mail The first I ever heard about the University of Alabama’s Neuroscience program was from a letter a woman I barely knew claimed was mine. This letter (Sent after a 2012 Big 10 Expo) had fallen into the wrong hands, thanks to the mailman and had travelled great distances from mailbox F to mailbox G. Serendipity I thought, after warily accepting my truant mail (lest it was another bill), as said letter offered a unique program tailored to fit my interests before my search for graduate programs in neuroscience ever began. From my youth (spent on the Caribbean isle of St. Lucia), I was captivated by the macabre, and this disquieting obsession progressed into a slightly less disturbing fascination with abnormal psychology. Many an afternoon…

Meritocracy could be construed to be flawed, as it is basing Australia to be a classless society that rewards its citizens for their abilities and talents. Kimball (1995) relates working concepts of meritocracy are closely linked to science. Science is believed to be true and objective, a more ‘meritorious’ type of knowledge that accurate people, methodologies and ideas. Science automatically assumes that science is elevated above other forms of knowledge which becomes apparent in scientists one way method of communication, and that there is nothing to be gained by a non scientific person (Kimball, 1995, p.141).…

Encouraging young women to enroll in engineering programs prompts the concern of how to maintain female involvement, especially when the material becomes increasingly challenging. Researchers for The American Association of University Women, pursued the question of why so few women are involved in science, math, engineering, and mathematics, and concluded in their 2010 publication, “Students who lack confidence in their math or science skills are less likely to engage in tasks that require those skills and will more quickly give up in the face of difficulty” (Hill, Corbett, and St. Rose 22). The central issue here is not wildly different than learning how to ride a bike or starting at a new school because all require a common remedy: encouragement to continue. When young students…

When I first began this class I thought that this would be just another introductory class that is required to orient you to the expectations of the particular college. Now, after completing this class, I know that this is not the case. Personal Dimensions of Learning has been a great help, not only to my school work, but also in my daily life. Before taking this class, I thought that learning, and completing daily tasks, were mostly memorizing the order of the way things are supposed to be done and just completing the task. I never liked this strategy, but it always seemed to be the most convenient way to get things done at school, home, and work.…
