My Decision To Go To College Essay

The first major event that I will identify as having influenced my decision to go to college is receiving the honor of captain of my school’s debate team. Now this influenced me in two ways: The first being that I was now responsible for not only my own success but other people’s success in this program. The second being that this was my first serious engagement as a leader in my school. I struggled with finding a balance between my team’s success and my own and never actually found the perfect equilibrium. Although I never found this harmony, the interaction with other students and their stories led me to my fondness for teaching. This seems cliché but just as Wes Moore based his decision of staying at Valley Forge on the people who had the biggest impact on his life. And after graduating high school the common question of “What are you going to do now?” arises. So just as Moore looked back on the most impactful people, I too analyzed the characters in my life to who was the most influential. People like Brian McCafferty, Isaac Chao, Lucy Seward, and Natasha Cruz all came to mind and all of these individuals have one thing in common. They are all teachers. Despite its problems I recognized how beneficial the education system really can be and I wanted to have the same meaningful output on society. Moore remembered Colonel Murphy saying something to the same extent, “When it is time for you to leave this school, leave your job, or even leave this earth, you make sure you have worked hard to make sure it mattered you were here.” Moore looked back on those who influenced his life the most and it led him to make the decision of staying at Valley Forge.
