Personal Essay: The Day That Changed My Life

It was the last week of first grade; I was sad that it was almost summer because I wouldn 't be able to see my friends for a long time. My mom was supposed to pick my sister and me up from school, but I was called down to the office and told to clean out my locker and get everything of mine because I was leaving. At the time I really had no idea what was going on or where I was going. Once I got to the office I didn 't see my mom, dad or grandma. I was very confused. I sat in a chair and waited for my sister, who walked in with the same look of confusion on her face. That’s when I saw her. A blond haired woman who I instantly recognized; it was my grandma from Michigan whom we had recently visited for Christmas. This would be the day that changed my life forever.
In the car, my grandma had explained to us that our dad had called and asked her to take care of us and make sure we had the opportunity to have an amazing life. She explained that we were going to be going back to Michigan to stay with her for a while. I didn’t understand why at the time but I liked the snow so I was excited to go. Once we arrived at my grandma’s, I noticed that my grandpa was very sick. My grandma told us he was indeed very sick; he had cancer. This meant that for the summer we spent a lot of time down in Ann Arbor

This all happened before my 8th birthday so as you could imagine it was very hard for me to understand the things going on and why things were the way they were. Some may think I am crazy to say this but I am so glad my childhood was the way it was, because it changed my life in so many ways. I am now an honor roll student and three sport athlete. I take a lot of pride in my academic and athletic accomplishments and I know I would not be the person I am today if I had stayed with my
