There is nothing in the world that parents won’t do for their children, even if it means disguising their worst struggles. This sorrowful ad from Hong Kong MetLife is a praise to the sacrifices “parents make for their children on a daily basis. Titled “‘My dad’s story’: Dream for My Child,” the commercial shows a father reading an essay his young daughter wrote about him.” In the ad “My Dad Is A Liar,” Metlife creates a tremendous amount of pathos in order to exhibit that every sacrifice is worth a child’s future.

The ethos in this ad is the name Metlife, which is a very known insurance for home, auto, and life coverage. Also, logos is present by the fact that the ad has scenes where the father is working hard day and night just to make enough money for his daughter. This demonstrates, to the parents watching, how much hard work and the struggles they go through every day to make sure their children have everything they need and how they always want more for their kids. Pathos is exhibited through music, the different moods of color, and a variety of feelings. During the first minute, the music is remarkably cheerful, the mood of the color is bright and merry, and it’s all smiles and laughter. However, starting at 1:02, the delightful melody in the background fades and a more dejected, piano-like, tune is produced to emphasize the sorrow and despair while the child’s voice is reading the letter. At 1:24, what sounds like a violin starts to play along with the piano-like tune and crescendos all the way through until 2:44 where it stops and then starts back up at 2:48 playing softer before it eventually grows louder and bigger all the way through to the end of the ad. The color throughout the second minute downcasts to a much more gloomy, darker mood, which also portrays that feelings grieve when displaying the various scenes of the hardworking father. From 3:08 to 3:15 the color in the background lightens back up to a very gleeful mood while both, the father and daughter, continue to walk down the park, laughing and giggling.
